MAVERICK

“You need to stop spoiling her,” I warn as Ezra empties his bag of goodies for Daisy. Among a whole host of craft sets, most of which seem to be pink and contain stupid amounts of glitter that is sure to piss Reid off immensely, there are toy unicorns and more hair accessories.

Why he thinks a three-year-old needs all this, I’ve no idea.

“Aw, you deserve it, don’t you?” Ezra says, replacing the purple bow in her hair with a glittery red one and then finishing it off with a matching tiara.

“There you go. You’re a princess now.”

“Just like Lana,” Daisy says with a wide smile.

Glancing over, I find an equally big smile on Alana’s face.

“Pfft, she wasn’t looking so royal last night,” JD deadpans.

“And no one needs to know about that, thank you, Julian,” Alana chastises.

“We heard it, don’t worry,” Griff mutters with an overdramatic shudder.

“Ugh, whatever,” Ezra says as he grabs himself a plate and pulls out a free chair to tuck in. “So you won’t guess who I ran into this morning at Hallie’s.”

“You’ve already had breakfast?” Reid asks, showing very little interest in who he’s seen.

“Consider this dessert,” he teases before stuffing more Nutella-slathered pancakes into his mouth.

“Animal,” Reid scoffs.

“So anyway,” Ezra continues with a mouthful of food. “You remember that girl I was telling you about the other day.” He looks between me and JD, but I don’t have a fucking clue what he’s talking about. He’s rambled a lot of shit during his visits in the past few days.

“Shouldn’t you be in class or something?” I ask instead of engaging.

He glares at me but pays about as much attention to my comment as I did his.

“The brunette with the shiny hair and the curves?” JD asks, although he doesn’t sound overly interested.

“Yep. That exact one.”

“Christ, is she stalking you or something? You should get Ellis to run a check on her, make sure she’s not a psycho.”

“I fucking wish,” he mutters, his tone dropping a little. “It doesn’t seem to be me that she’s interested in.”

“Aw, did she give you the cold shoulder?” Reid mocks. “Can’t say I’m surprised. I’ve heard some of your pickup lines.”

“Fuck off, Bro,” Ezra snaps, forgetting who’s listening.

“Bad word, Uncle Ezwa,” Daisy chastises.

“Sorry, your highness,” he says, bowing to her like a moron.

“Anyway, I spoke to her this time and it seems that I’m not actually the one she’s stalking.”

“Devin humped and dumped, didn’t he?” JD asks, laughing.

“Nope. Apparently, it was you,” Ezra says, staring JD dead in the eyes.

Silence falls around the table.

“Uh…” JD hesitates.
