“No,” Reid rumbles. “We’ve got this. We’re a team.”

“A family,” JD corrects.

“One for all and all for one.” JD laughs.

We steal a few more minutes together before we walk out of the office as one unit, a united front. And this time, I might not be walking into the war head first, but I’m not being left out. I’m part of this just like they promised. I’ll be doing an equally important job. I’ll be protecting our princess while they claim our kingdom.

Failure is not an option.

No one has said the words, but that’s the feeling surrounding us as the clock ticks toward the time the guys have to leave.

Griff and the guys disappeared to the clubhouse not long after we emerged from Reid’s office to immobilize Reid’s army with Cash.

I took Aubrey to meet Daisy, which was an experience. If I didn’t know that Aubrey was once a little girl herself, I wouldn’t think she’d ever been near a child before from how awkward she was. She certainly had none of JD or Ezra’s ease.

But despite trying to distract me while Reid, JD, and Mav murmured to each other in the kitchen, coloring unicorns and covering everything in sight with glitter doesn’t do anything to take my mind off what’s to come.

With every second that passes, the sun gets a little lower in the sky and the impending war gets closer and closer.

“Okay, little lady, I think we need to go and dunk you in the bath.” I laugh, taking in the way her hair shimmers with stray glitter.

“Yay, bath time,” she shouts excitedly.

All three of my guys look over, watching us with so much love in their eyes it makes my chest hurt.

“Leave this. You all go and spend a few minutes together,” Aubrey says, scooping up a handful of glitter.

“Are you sure?” I ask.

“Go,” she says, shooing me away.

“Last one to the bathroom is a loser,” JD says before taking off, ensuring a squealing Daisy follows him.

“I’m not sure who is the biggest kid,” Aubrey mutters.

Reid barks out a laugh. “That’s easy. JD by a mile.”

“I heard that, asshole,” JD shouts from the stairs.

“Bad word,” Daisy chastises.

“She’s awesome, by the way,” Aubrey announces. “You’re going to have your work cut out for you in years to come, though.”

“Why do you say that?” Mav asks with a frown.

Aubrey laughs. “She’s already got that twinkle in her eye.”

“Twinkle?” Reid asks, confusion wrinkling his brow.

“Stubborn female. You think this one is bad,” she says, pointing at me. “Just wait until that one is a teenager.”

“Right, well, it was great seeing you, Kendrick,” Reid announces. “But I’m not sure your services are required tonight after all.”

“Pfft, I’m the best soldier you’ve got, and you know it,” she states. “You couldn’t execute this without me.”
