We thunder up the stairs, all having the same line of thought, and come to an abrupt halt in the doorway of Daisy’s new room.

And there, lying beside our princess is our queen.

She stirs, our movements disturbing her, but she doesn’t immediately wake.

My impatience starts to get the better of me and the need to rush over and drag her out of bed is almost impossible to ignore.

“I knew you’d all come back for her,” a soft sleepy voice murmurs, dragging all our attention to the rocking chair where we find Kristie under a blanket.

“Always,” Reid confirms before her eyes flutter closed, sleep dragging her under.

ALANA

Something makes me stir, but I’m fast asleep, and my body doesn’t want to comply. It’s desperate to shut reality out and get lost in the depths of nothingness again.

But then I remember where I am, and my eyes fly open.

The second my sight adjusts to the darkness and I see Daisy sleeping soundly next to me in her small cot bed, I breathe a sigh of relief.

Looking up, I find that Kristie is also fast asleep in the rocking chair.

They’re both settled and safe, but that doesn’t explain why my skin is prickling.

Suddenly, I’m hit with all the things that happened yesterday and fear grips me in a tight hold as I look at the door, desperate to find that they’re home.

All the air rushes from my lungs when I find three shadowy figures standing there watching over us.

“Oh my God,” I gasp, scrambling out of bed as fast as I can without waking Daisy.

In seconds, I’m racing across the thick carpet and launching myself into their waiting arms.

“You came back,” I whisper-cry, tears freely streaming down my cheeks as I cling to them.

They’re covered in dust and dirt and smell like a bonfire, but I don’t care.

“Promised we would, didn’t we?” Reid says as if there was ever any doubt.

I mean, there wasn’t, not really. I trusted him to have everything properly planned and execute it to perfection. But still. There were a lot of things that could go wrong.

As a unit, we move from Daisy’s room and down to Reid’s.

“What happened? Are you all okay? Is he dead?” I ask, all the questions coming out in a rush with my need to know everything the second the door closes behind us.

Reid holds my face in his hands and stares down into my eyes as both JD and Mav each take one of my hands.

Their warmth and strength rush through me, settling all the unease I’ve been battling with since the moment Reid walked in on me and JD in the gym.

“Everything is good, Pet. It all went as planned,” Reid explains.

“He’s dead?”

“As a fucking dodo, Dove. It was fucking beautiful. You should have seen them, all five of them lined up and?—”

His words drift off into nothingness when Reid leans forward and brushes his lips against mine. One. Twice.

It’s as if he’s testing me. Checking to make sure I still want this after what they’ve done tonight.
