“She wouldn’t be in the basement with Daisy?—”

“I think tonight might just be the night Kristie rejoins humanity,” I confess.

“J, what did you do?”

“Me?” I ask innocently, pointing at myself. “Why would you think?—”

“Julian,” he warns.

“Fine. I took her down clothes and shit and told her in not so many words that Alana needed her in the hope of inspiring her out of that cell.”

“Do you think that was a good idea?” Mav asks.

“Only time will tell. She can’t stay down there forever.”

Unlike the drive here, no sooner has Reid pulled out of the hidden road does he reach for the volume and turns up the music.

“Fuck, yeah. Let’s party,” I shout happily, more than willing to dance on Victor Harris’s grave.

Reid’s grip on the wheel is tight again, but when I look over, I find a smile playing on his lips.

“You fucking did that, man. Did you see how fucking epic it was?”

“Nah,” he said, shaking his head. “Us, remember.”

“Bollocks. You fucking did that. Be proud, bro. Take the compliment.”

“He’s not wrong,” Mav says, leaning forward and shouting over the music. “You fucking killed it tonight.”

Reid shakes his head again, unable to process what’s happened.

Years and years of planning, of hoping and wishing while we’ve been forced to dance to the beat of Victor’s tune is over.

“We are the kings of Harrow fucking Creek, boys,” I bellow, throwing my arms up in the air.

Reid laughs, it’s controlled and stiff for a few seconds, but then something changes and he finally begins embracing the high of the night.

He throws his head back and roars in delight. It’s a fucking sight and I love it.

I’m still riding as high as a fucking kite when we pull up to the house, but unlike all the other times we’re returned home recently, Reid doesn’t go around the back to hide; instead, he pulls through the front gate, which is arguably as secluded as the back, but it allows him to park right out in front of the manor.

The king is home, ladies and gentlemen.

I start hysterically laughing all over again, but this time, no one joins me. They’re too distracted by what’s waiting for us inside.

The house is still in darkness as we let ourselves in. The curtains and shutters have all remained closed since we got back from the safe house. None of us wanting to draw attention to ourselves. Something tells me that that is about to change.

The second we’re inside, all three of us race down the hallway in search of our woman.

But we come up empty.

My heart begins to race, but one look at the stairs, and I know exactly where she is.

I’ve no idea if the others are following us back or what’s happening, but I don’t care, all I need right now is her.

My little dove.

I want her to know what a badass her big man is and to celebrate in the only way that makes sense for us.
