He looks back at his nephew and his grin grows. He might be just as dangerous as my men, but the love and adoration he has for Reid is clear in his expression.

Seeing it, my chest constricts with emotion. None of us have grown up with loving, doting parents, so to see that Reid might just have someone he can look up to and lean on should he need it affects me more than I expected it to.

“Here comes trouble,” Griff rasps, making everyone aware of my presence.

All eyes turn on me, ensuring my temperature spikes with their attention.

JD is on his feet in a heartbeat while Reid’s eyes run down the length of me.

I’m not sure why. I’m wearing one of their massive hoodies as a dress. He can’t exactly see much, but it doesn’t stop his eyes from darkening, or his tongue from sneaking out to wet his lips.

“Dove,” JD breathes, stepping right up to me and pulling me into his arms without any hesitation.

It would be so easy to melt into him. To forget everything that’s happened today and lose myself in his arms, in his kiss.

But I can’t.

I might understand, and I might have forgiven them already, but they don’t need to know that.

“Baby, come on,” he begs softly when I don’t react to his embrace.

His lips brush against the shell of my ear, making a shudder rip down my spine, and my resolve not to cave to him almost shatters.

“I need you, little dove,” he whispers, his lips against the corner of my mouth.

Holding his eyes firm, I refuse to relax into him.

“You should have thought about that before keeping things from me,” I state coldly.

My words cut through the air and land like a nuclear bomb.

Silence follows as everyone waits to see who’s going to react first.

I already know it’s not going to be me.

JD searches my eyes, silently begging me to let this go.

I hate to hurt him, especially after what he’s just been through. But if I let this go easily, then they’ll do it again.

I refuse for them to see me like a weak woman who needs protecting.

We agreed to be a team, to fight this war together. And that is exactly what I intend to do.

“You’re killing me here, Dove. I’m sorry, okay. Really fucking sorry.”

My heart aches as I stare back at JD. He looks like a sad little puppy who’s lost his favorite toy. But cuteness doesn’t fix anything.

“It’s going to take more than a few words.”

His face lights up with a grin. “I have actions too, baby. Lots and lots of actions.”

Shaking my head, I step out of his embrace, much to his irritation, and move deeper into the kitchen.

“Are there any leftovers?” I ask, lifting the foil that’s covering a dish.

My mouth waters the second I see the lasagna.

“I’ve got you, come and sit down,” Aubrey says, pushing to her feet.
