“You’re safe, little dove. I won’t let anyone hurt you ever again.”

She doesn’t react to my whispered words. I can only assume she’s still sleeping. So when she speaks, it scares the crap out of me.

“I should have known you’d sneak your way in, Julian Dempsey.”

Her voice is deep and raspy with sleep; it hits me right in the dick.

“First chance I got, baby,” I confess happily.

I don’t tell her that I actually slept in here with her and Mav; she doesn’t need to know that. However, something tells me that, on some level, she already knows.

“You’re a goofball.” She laughs, turning to look at me.

A lock of hair falls across her face. She lifts her hand to move it, but I beat her to it, gently tucking it behind her ear.

My fingers trail over her soft skin longer than necessary, but I can’t help it. I’m addicted.

“Julian,” she warns.

“Miss you, Dove,” I confess.

“I’m right here.”

“I know but there’s at least a foot between us. That’s a whole foot too many.”

Her eyes bounce between mine as she tries to make a decision.

She wants to be in my arms. Her heart knows it, her head, however…

“Where’s Mav?” she asks, noticing the other side of the bed is empty.

“They’ve gone to meet Kai.”

She freezes, her grip on the sheets tightening.

“In the middle of the day? What if they’re seen? What if they?—”

“Shhh, little dove. Reid and Mav know what they’re doing. They’re not going to put themselves, or us, at risk.”

She chews on her bottom lip.

“I don’t like it. At least if it were dark?—”

“Trust them.”

“I… I do. But Kai? Can we trust him?”

I really want to say yes right away to help lessen her concern. But that wouldn’t be the honest answer she’s looking for.

“I don’t know,” I confess. “I think we can, but we’ve no way of knowing for sure.”

“Sidney Hyde is bad, though, right?” she asks, proving that she knows very little about the surrounding gangs and their main players.

“I mean, he’s not good, that’s for sure. But as far as I know, he’s not as bad as Victor.”

“Is anyone?” she asks sadly.

“Sidney is corrupt. He’s got his fingers in some of the same pies Victor has. It’s why they get on so well.”
