“I made a meal,” he states proudly as we take a seat at the island and dig in.

I refrain from pointing out the facts and let him bask in his achievement.

* * *

The sound of the front door slamming and then deep rumbling voices fill the air.

“They’re back,” I rasp before jumping to my feet and running to meet them.

“Motherfuckers,” JD mutters behind me, but I pay him little mind.

I make a point of ignoring Reid, and immediately jump into Mav’s arms.

“Whoa, miss me, Doll?” he asks, staring down at me with a smile.

“What happened? Is Kai going to help?”

Reid mutters something under his breath before stalking toward the kitchen, ducking past JD, who’s standing in the doorway.

Tucking me against his side, Mav guides me back toward the kitchen before falling onto the couch and pulling me onto his lap.

“So,” I prompt as Reid kick-starts the coffee machine. He rests his ass back against the counter and folds his thick arms over his chest.

“Kai is onboard. He’s putting everything in place as we speak. Sidney is going to invite Victor to an impromptu meeting tomorrow night.”

“Tomorrow night?” I whisper. My stomach bottoms out with the realization that I’m going to have to wait an entire day.

“Yeah. Kai needs time. He’s going out on a limb for us here. If Sidney discovers the truth and snitches to Victor then we’re all royally fucked.”

I nod, not needing to hear anymore.

“How are you faking the message?” I ask. I’m totally out of my depth with all this tech stuff, but that doesn’t stop me from wanting to understand.

“Kai is going to hook Ellis up with his guy and they’re going to… do something,” Reid says, also not understanding the details of that. “We just need to make sure we’re at the meet point long before the time they agree so we’re not spotted.”

My heart pounds at the thought of ambushing Victor, standing before him, and watching as someone—hopefully me—finally gets to put an end to his miserable life.

My hands tremble with the enormity of it all.

“I’m going to be there,” I state, looking each of them in the eyes before holding Reid’s. “You are not?—”

“You can come,” Reid says before silence fills the room.

JD and Mav want to argue; I can see it on their faces, but they wisely keep their mouths closed.

“Okay, great. Good.”

“I’m taking him out though,” Reid says, his voice like ice.

No one argues. No one says a word as he turns around, pulls the full mug of coffee from the tray, and replaces it with an empty one.

He stalks toward me with the steaming mug, his eyes locked on mine.

“Team, yeah?” he says, handing me the coffee like a peace offering.

I study him, looking for any kind of lie hidden in those words, but I don’t find anything but sincerity.

Pushing to my feet, I step up to him and lift up on my toes.
