Despite her assuring me that things don’t look as they seem, I can’t help looking back over my shoulder and watching as the glow from the flames vanishes behind us.

My heart and chest ache, and my eyes burn as I continue to cry.

I hold onto Aubrey as she shoots through the undergrowth, but this time, I don’t get anywhere near the same thrill as I did on the way here.

Everything is once again in question.

But the biggest one is if I can trust her.

Is she telling the truth, or was what I just witnessed only the beginning of this living nightmare?

REID

“Ithought you said this was going to be easy,” JD complains behind me.

I never fucking said that. But I’m not about to point it out now.

What I think I said was that it’s possible.

There was a reason Aubrey chose this safe house. And this tunnel is exactly it.

“Just keep fucking moving,” I say, blinking against the dark, and praying that the doors we locked behind us are as secure as we believe them to be.

We felt the moment the house went up. The ground beneath us shook with the blast.

My heart jumped into my throat, and I know I wasn’t the only one who felt that as we thought about the member of our team that’s missing.

The decision to keep her out of this and ensure she wasn’t a part of this escape wasn’t an easy one, nor was it without risk.

But from the very moment that Aubrey passed on the intel that our location had been leaked, I knew she couldn’t go through this.

So we came up with a backup plan. One that would hopefully be enough to keep her safe, and to make those who want us all dead believe that we’d all gone up in the flames. As if it would be that easy.

“Stop fucking complaining,” Griff barks from upfront. “If anyone gets to moan, it’s me. I’m double your fucking age, kid.”

JD grumbles under his breath.

I get it. It’s dark, cold, and dirty as fuck down here. But he’s going to have to suck it up.

“Just think of what’s on the other end,” I shoot back.

He falls silent as he presumably thinks about his dove, our home.

Yeah, I can’t fucking wait either.

“Mav, you good?” I bark, concerned for the man who hasn’t said a word this entire time.

He might be stronger than he has been the past few days, but he’s still struggling and scurrying through this bullshit tunnel is probably about the last thing he needs right now.

“Yeah.” He grunts, sounding pissed off like the old version of him I used to love to hate.

“You gotta trust me, bro.”

“Remind me of that when we’re all together and those cunts are dead.”

“Will do,” I say arrogantly.
