She nods. “I do. That’s why we’re standing here. I told him it was a stupid plan.”

“W-what?” I stutter.

Another loud bang rips through the air. It startles me to the point I forget about what I’m doing and lower the gun.

Aubrey has it back in her hand in a heartbeat and tucked safely away.

“We really need to get out of here.”

“You want me to leave?” I ask, horrified.

“I made a promise, Alana. I swore on my life that I’d get you out of there and keep you safe, and I have every intention of following through on that. But if we hang around here too much longer then I’m afraid things might get taken out of my hands.”

I stare at her, a deep frown wrinkling my brow.

“What are you saying?”

“I’m following orders, Alana. Reid’s orders.”

I look back at the house, tears still falling, but there’s now confusion along with everything else I’m battling.

“Reid’s orders. He knew?” I ask, glancing back at the house. “Why would he?—”

“Come on,” Aubrey says, taking my hand and pulling me away from the edge of the clearing. “If we get caught up here, we’re fucked. I’m taking you home.”

“Home?” I ask.

“Yes, home.” Turning to me, she takes my face in her hands again and stares deep into my eyes. “You can trust me, Alana. Everything is going to be okay.”

“I just watched the house my… my men were inside blow up before my eyes.”

“Yeah, that’s on me. I was meant to warn you before it blew.”

Betrayal burns through me.

He lied.

He lied to my face when he told me that we were a team.

He promised to include me in everything from here on out.

I look back over my shoulder, seeing the ruined house with all-new eyes as I’m dragged into the trees, swallowed by the shadows.

“I need you to explain this.”

“I know, and I will. But not right now. We’ve already wasted enough time. If we get caught here then…” Her words trail off as she pulls a helmet from beneath the seat for me.

“Tuck your hair up. The less chance you’ll be recognized, the better.”

“What the fuck is this? The Great Escape?” I snap, taking it from her and doing as I’m told.

“Something like that,” she mutters before throwing her leg over the bike and bringing it to life.

The deep rumble of the engine makes the ground vibrate beneath my feet.

“Get the fuck on,” she shouts. “The sooner we’re safe, the sooner I’ll explain everything.”

With a huff, I secure the helmet and climb on behind her.
