It’s wood, it shouldn’t be all that hard to bust open even if it is swollen as fuck.

“Ready?” Griff asks.

“Yeah. J?”

“We got this.”

We all move back as much as we’re able before Griff counts down and the three of us ram it with our shoulders.

It creaks, but it doesn’t budge.

“Fuck. That hurt.”

“Do you need to sit this out, old man?” JD taunts.

“Shut up. Let’s do this.”

“I can help,” Mav offers, but all three of us quickly refuse, much to his irritation if his huff is anything to go by.

“Okay, let’s go again,” Griff instructs before beginning his second countdown.

Three more attempts later, and other than a lot of creaking and sore shoulders, we’re not really any farther forward.

“Fuck. Fuck. Fuck,” JD complains, getting frustrated with our lack of progress.

“We’re gonna get it, J. We’re gonna get back to her.”

“I knew this was a bad idea,” Mav mutters.

“How the fuck is that helping anyone, asshole?” I hiss.

“This time, boys,” Griff says confidently. “We’ve got this. We’re busting out of this joint.”

And after throwing everything we have at the wooden door stopping us from returning to the world on the other side, the thing finally creaks loudly before it shatters.

JD manages to catch himself, but Griff and I go flying through the gap we’ve just created and land ungracefully on the other side, the shattered, old rotted door in pieces beneath us.

“Smooth,” JD taunts as he and Mav step through the doorway and out into the daylight.

The sun might be out, but we’re thick in the trees that surround the safe house. Looking around, there is nothing but forest.

“Which way?” Mav asks.

He’s on edge, has been since he was outvoted about this plan.

I thought he was going to fuck it up for us. But apparently, he’s got a better poker face than I gave him credit for because the second Alana was close, he pushed it all aside.

“North, for two miles,” I say confidently, ensuring his eyes turn on me. “What?”

“You got a fucking compass in your pocket too, boy scout?”

“Fuck off. If you wanted to be a part of planning this then all you had to do was say.”

“Let’s just fucking go,” he says, dismissing my comment and taking off.

“That’s south,” I point out smugly.

“What the fuck ever. Lead the way, oh mighty one.”
