“Yeah,” Mav agrees.

Reid thinks for a moment, considering his options before he nods.

“Yeah, okay.” Lifting me back into JD’s lap. He grabs his cell from the top drawer of his desk, and after tapping the screen, he lifts it to his ear. “Wonder if Aubrey is feeling generous?” He laughs before leaving the room.

“Aubrey?” I ask once he’s disappeared.

“Private jet,” JD explains. “She knows exactly how to move around unseen and we could do with a bit of that right now.”

“Should we go pack?” I ask, hopeful that we can pull this off.

Heavy footsteps thump closer again before Reid reappears. I expect him to say it’s not happening, no one organizes a flight on a private jet that fast. But in true Reid Harris fashion, he floors me with only a handful of words.

“We take off in two hours. Better pack a bag.”

A mixture of relief and excitement rushes through my veins.

Chicago.

For some reason, it’s exactly where I need to be. I might not find what I really want there, but something tells me that it’ll get us so much closer to the truth.

“Aubrey will meet us there.”

“She’s coming?” I ask happily. We haven’t seen her since before it went down with Razor in Hazard Grove.

“We can hardly walk into a club full of these cunts. But she can.”

MAVERICK

“Well, this is different,” I deadpan as we walk onto the private jet Aubrey organized for us on such short notice.

“Oh my God.” Alana gasps, her eyes wide as she takes everything in. “This is?—”

“You really live the high life, huh, Aubs?” JD teases.

“Oh yeah, running around chasing all the corrupt assholes of the world is glamour at its finest.”

Flipping him off, she drops into one of the seats and places her laptop on the table in front of her.

Reid drops down opposite her. He immediately pulls out his phone and leans over to show her an email while JD, Alana, and I take the couch that’s behind them.

“Why aren’t we going somewhere hot with white sand and drinks in coconuts?” Alana sulks, gazing out the window at the dark storm clouds in the distance.

“One day,” I promise, linking our fingers together and holding tight. “Bet this isn’t what you expected for your first flight.”

JD rears back.

“You’ve never flown before?” he asks.

Alana shakes her head, her entire body deflating. “I was barely allowed out of the house, Julian.”

JD swallows, regretting the question.

“Fuck, Dove.”

“It’s okay.”
