We are going to find her some kind of answer on this trip.

ALANA

From the moment we stepped on the private jet, I felt like some kind of celebrity. And that didn’t change when we walked down the steps and found a blacked-out town car waiting to whisk us away.

I had no idea where we were going, and quite frankly, while I was with my men, I didn’t care.

We might have mostly been flying by the seat of our pants, but I was confident that Reid and Aubrey had a plan.

The car drove us through Chicago. I’m not sure if the driver had been instructed to ensure we saw some of the sights, but that was what happened. And if Reid had orchestrated it then I’m grateful.

I’ve seen very little of the world that exists outside of Harrow Creek, and even though it’s from the back of a car, it means everything to me.

In such a short time, Reid and JD have given me so much, and no matter what the outcome of all of this is, I’ll forever be grateful for it.

After a tour of the city, the town car eventually dropped us in an underground parking lot, and we followed Aubrey to the elevator and then into a swanky penthouse suite on the top floor of a hotel.

The view is beyond words. The twinkling lights of the city spread for miles before us.

I’ve barely moved away from the floor-to-ceiling windows, trying to soak up the atmosphere of the city below.

The guys chat away, plan, and scheme. Reid has had numerous phone calls that he’s left the room for while the others have continued to trawl through pages and pages of information. But as far as I’m aware, nothing new has been uncovered.

It’s almost ten p.m. when I invite myself into Aubrey’s room to find her wearing a stunning little black dress as she puts the finishing touches to her makeup.

“Holy shit, girl. You look incredible.”

Her eyes find mine in the mirror, the corners crinkling slightly with amusement.

“You don’t need to look so surprised,” she teases.

Aubrey is stunningly beautiful. She has her long dark hair pulled back into a sleek high ponytail. Her makeup is on point, making her large almond-shaped eyes even bigger and more mesmerizing.

Seriously, men do not stand a chance against her beauty. And I haven’t even started on her body. She has a figure to die for, and the way that dress hugs her curves… damn. I totally would if that were my thing.

“I still don’t see what the big deal is about me coming with you,” I sulk. More than just a little jealous seeing her all dolled up and ready for a night out.

I can’t remember the last time I got all dressed up. Although I can honestly say I’ve never had a night out quite like she’s going to have.

Aubrey shoots me a look that is full of excitement and wicked intent.

“They want to keep you safe,” she says, echoing the guys’ repeated excuse about why I can’t go with her. They can’t show their faces because there is a chance they might be recognized. But surely, I’m safe. I’ve spent almost all my life locked up. “But I’ve got a couple of spare dresses if you want to break the rules.”

A grin spreads across my face as her words settle.

“Do I want to break the rules?” I roll my eyes so hard they hurt.

Hell yes, I want to get into that place and see if I can find any answers firsthand.

A mixture of excitement and fear collide in my stomach.

This is potentially the closest I’ve been to my sister since the day she was ripped from my life.

“Exactly what I thought. Get your ass over here and let’s see what we can do. One look at you, and those men won’t be able to form words let alone argue about this,” she promises as I lower my ass to her dressing table and allow her to get to work.

Thirty minutes later, and I swear to God that Aubrey is a freaking magician. My makeup is dark and smokey, making my eyes look bluer than I’m sure they ever have, and I suddenly have a new obsession with my shorter hair that I’ve been struggling to embrace since Reid decided to hack it off.
