It’s a look I’m sure might work with her marks, but Reid knows her far too well to fall for it.

“No. The best person to protect Alana is me.” Mav scoffs.

“Us,” Reid corrects. “She’s staying here with us. We’ll watch on screen.”

“She deserves this, Reid. A night out, to feel like she’s helping. To get?—”

“Please.” The plea spills from my lips before I even realize I want to say it.

JD stills, his fingers flexing on my hips.

“Dove,” he warns quietly.

“No,” I hiss, finding my backbone. Pushing him from my body, I step in front of Reid. “You don’t get to tell me what I can and can’t do. You’ve already made enough decisions for me. I’m the boss of me. I get to say what I do and don’t do. And tonight, I want to follow Aubrey into that club and I want to find a way to talk to those dancers and get answers.

“I’ve spent all my adult light dreaming of an opportunity like this. I need to be involved, Reid.

“I know it’s dangerous. Trust me, I do. But I’ll take weapons.” Mav’s brow quirks in amusement as his eyes drop to the length of my almost nonexistent dress. Okay, sure. It isn’t exactly ideal for concealing a weapon. “I won’t leave Aubrey’s side,” I promise. “Please, just let me do this. Ineedto do this.”

“Fuck,” Reid barks, shoving his fingers into his hair and pulling it tight as he falls back on the couch. “FUCK.”

The deep boom of his voice might startle me, but it’s nowhere near enough to make me back down.

“Babe, I’m not sure this is such a good idea,” Mav says, taking Reid’s side, although when I focus on his eyes, I see that it pains him to do so.

“None of what we’re doing right now is a good idea,” I point out. “I need to get in there, Mav. If any of those girls have seen Kristie…”

A lump crawls up my throat at just the thought of them seeing her, spending time with her.

“I know, Doll. But?—”

“I know all the buts. They’re not going to stop me.”

JD steps back up to me, the heat of his hands on my hips warming me from the inside out.

“You really want to do this?” he whispers in my ear, making my nipples harden and press against the silky fabric covering me.

“Yes,” I breathe, leaning into him.

“Then you should do it. We only regret the things we don’t do, right?”

Twisting around, I find his eyes, needing to know if he’s just saying that to try and make up for the bullshit they pulled at the safe house, or if he really means it.

When our gazes lock, I see nothing but sincerity, and my heart flutters in my chest.

‘Thank you,’ I mouth, needing him to know how much his support means to me.

“You’ve got to keep your comms on at all times, and you do not leave Aubrey’s side,” he warns darkly.

I smirk at him. “Sure thing, Daddy.”

His nostrils flare and his pupils dilate.

“Jesus Christ, you can’t be serious?” Reid barks, jumping to his feet and holding my eyes as if that alone will make me back down.
