“That you love her?”?

His words don’t shock me; she is one of the few people on this earth I do love. But I contemplate exactly what that means, because I know my feelings for her are far from what I feel for my mom, my brother, or any of my other friends.?

I glance down at her and walk out of the room, unable to answer my brother.?

A few minutes later, when she unconsciously wraps her body around my own, I understand exactly why people say lovehurts.?

Because I know without a doubt, this girl has the power to destroy me.

“Wake up, Emmy,” a whispering voice says, accompanied by a light push on my shoulder.?

“Nu-uh,” I groan in protest. The cool temperature of the car window feels too good against my hot skin to move.Geez, how much did I drink??

“Come on, we’re home.”?

“Nope, no moving.”?

I hear a car door open and shut, and moments later, my door is opened slowly, as if prepared for my body to sag its way.?

“Grrr!” But Colton doesn’t listen to my warning. He just leans over me and unbuckles my seatbelt. I snap my teeth, as if to bite his arm when he retracts.?

“I’m going to carry you if you don’t get your ass moving.” I mock a sad face that does nothing but cause him to laugh and yank my body out of the car.?

When he goes to lift me bride style, I yell, “I can walk…myself!”?

“Then move it.”?

Within two steps, I stumble and have to link my arm through Colton’s. Yup, definitely drunk.?

“Do you have your key?” he asks a few steps later, causing me to pause.Lucian’s not home.?

“Nope, not going… I sleepin’ at your house.”?

He spins me in his arms, holding me upright as he studies my face. My drunken state has me squeezing one eye closed so I can focus on him.?

“Why won’t you sleep at home, Em?” He sounds concerned. But I can’t explain that now. I’m not in the right headspace to talk about it.?

“Just can’t—don’t want to.” I shake my head vehemently.?

“I think the Robbins are home if you’re afraid of being alone.”?

I can’t help but scoff at his comment.Yeah, because they really care about my well-being.?

He stares at me for a few seconds before turning us around and heading to his place. I sigh in relief. “Let's get you some water and Tylenol. Then you’re sleeping this off. And tomorrow, when you are sober, you have some explaining to do.”?

I lean into his shoulder as we walk up his front steps and into his house, thankful for my best friend. I’ll find a way to avoid his questions tomorrow… It’s not like he can change anything.

My heart racesas the approaching footsteps stop outside my bedroom door. I replaced the lock today, hoping it would keep him away. It never deters him for too long.?

I hear him try the knob, only for a muttered curse to sound through the thin door when he realizes my attempts. Clutching the pocketknife a little closer, he tries the knob again with a bit more force.?

The harder the doorknob jiggles, the more frantic I become. Sitting in the corner of my bed, my shaky hand holds the small knife pointed toward the door. Facing the blade away from my body.?

If only it was that easy that a small knife would protect me…but my target is more than double the size of me.?
