Melody’s head whipped up. “What?”

Ella pointed to the two horns jutting out from just above Melody’s temples. “Your horns. They are beautiful. Who made them for you?” She saw Melody, just stunned and blinking in disbelief. “Never mind, that was rude of me. You must be going to a costume party and here I am taking up your time.”

“No, no. I… I’m totally free, I just must have forgotten to take them off.” She reached up to touch her own horns and gave a forced smile.

“Well, I love them. The black with gold tips fits you.” Ella leaned to the side and smiled again. “And your tail is fabulous.”

“My…tail…right. I forgot that too.”

“Well, it fit you very well, but how do you get it to move so realistically?”

There was a cough from the doorway and Adam peaked his head out. “Is it safe for me to come out? I brought you a drink.”

Ella nodded, and Melody hopped up and pulled the curtains back to reveal the very beginnings of the sun beams dancing on the water. It was breathtaking, even without any colors other than blue painting the sky. Taking the drink, she settled in her lounger as Adam and Melody disappeared into the house after a quick goodbye from the receptionist.

Adam wasn’tsure why his employee was dragging him down to the front door with her claw digging into him. “Mel, what is going on?”

She stopped at the door and spun on him. “She can see me, Adam!” Pointing dramatically at her horns. “She can see me, my horns, my tail. What the hell is going on with her? What is she?”

He shook his head. “She’s just a human. I don’t know why she can see us the way we are. She can see past my glamour to hide my scars, and she said that Grace glowed.”

Melody snorted. “Well, of course the goddess glows, but I am a demon.” She stomped her foot and crossed her arms over her chest. “And damn it, Adam, I like her. I don’t want to scare her. Why is this happening?”

Again he shook his head. “I don’t know, Mel. I know you like her, I don’t really think she’d be afraid of you.”

“Oh so you want me to just go say ‘hey I’m a demon, want to be friends?’ It might be a bit awkward.”

He clasped his hand on her shoulder and squeezed. “I’ll figure it out, promise. She has an Isis talisman, so I think I’ll give Osiris a visit and see if he might know what is going on or if it’s just a coincidence.”

She rubbed her hands over her arms and nodded. “Hopefully he can help. Honestly, I think you should keep Grace away. What if Ella sees more than just a glow?”

“Yeah, I’m gonna give her a call and see what she thinks. But first I have a sunset to watch.”

CHAPTER6

Ella sippedher glass of water and stared out at the ocean until Adam came into view. She smiled up at him and noticed he was holding a variety of bottles. Giving a smirk, she laughed. “Are you trying to get me drunk?”

He held up all the bottles held between his fingers, he shook his head. “I didn’t know if you wanted any wine tonight or if you wanted tea or water?”

“Wine would be nice, but I don’t know anything about it, so I have no idea of what I like.”

He nodded and headed back inside. “Leave that to me.”

A few minutes later, he returned with a wine glass filled halfway with a pale pink liquid. She took the drink and thanked him as he pulled a second lounger over to place next to hers. Ella found herself slightly annoyed with the arm rests between them, but before the thought left her brain, Adam had lowered them and pressed their chairs closer.

He sat next to her, and she couldn’t help but smile over at him. The colors started to ripple over the water, and Adam wrapped his arm around her and pulled her against him. She didn’t give anything a second thought, Ella leaned her head against his shoulder and curled up next to him. They sat in silence, watching the sunset on the horizon with blue waters meeting with vivid pink and orange shades in the sky. This was all she needed. This night would be one she would hold in her heart. She wouldn’t forget this.

Adam absently twirled her hair, his breathing lolled her almost to sleep by the time the sun had finally disappeared and even there in the growing darkness neither of them moved, neither of them spoke. He seemed as at ease as she was, and Ella wanted to capture the soothing sound of his breathing, so she could always fall asleep to that unique sound.

Finally, Adam turned to her, their faces so close to one another that it made her insides go all giddy. “You getting tired?”

She shook her head, but a yawn betrayed her.

He chuckled and looked back out at the water. “It’s a calm enough night tonight, we could just fall asleep under the stars.”

“That would be nice, I can’t remember the last time I slept outside.”
