Adam’s mouthwas on hers before she could even finish her sentence. His scent engulfed her, and she felt her shoulders relax. Moaning softly and tilted her head and poured everything into the kiss as she did, Ella felt something flutter in her stomach. Instantly she clenched up and pain erupted inside her.

Adam pulled back and rested his forehead against her as she breathed heavy. “You were letting go, now you’re fighting it again.”

“It hurts.” She cried out.

“Let it go, Ella. Damn it, you don’t have to fight.”

She doubled over with a scream and without any warning, Adam’s dragon surged forward with an earth rumbling roar. Where Adam had stood was now a giant, ancient creature that stole her breath and sent fear and awe through her body. His body was bigger than some buildings, his eyes glowed with a menacing power, hot breath from his gaping maw engulfed her as she stared at the large teeth, he bore at her.

The creature roared again, and something inside her rubbed against her insides. She stiffened to fight against it, but the dragon swung his head down to come face to face with her and in a voice that sent her soul on fire he ordered her, “Stop fighting.”

Ella stood perfectly still and squeezed her eyes shut until she felt something sharp touch her chin. Opening her eyes slowly, she saw his paw, with one fingered claw pointing her chin upward.

The dragon’s voice vibrated every bone in her body as he commanded. “Let my mate out.”

Her eyes widened and the shiver inside herself happened again, this time she didn’t fight it, but nothing happened. Still, he seemed pleased.

“Adam, I don’t know what to do.”

He lowered his massive head down to nuzzle gently against her cheek, but he didn’t answer. Instead, the voice in her head spoke loud and clear. “I’ve tried for so long to stay dormant, but I can’t fight it anymore. I’ve tried to protect you, Ella, but I need you to let me out for the both of us.”

“I don’t know who you are.” Ella pleaded to the voice.

“I am you. You are me. We are one.”

“Why didn’t you tell me all of this.”

“You were so afraid of everything the world showed you, you wouldn’t have believed me.”

As Adam sat there nuzzling her, she wept. At first silently but as the seconds ticked by her sobs became louder and gut-wrenching. Still, the dragon held her, his paw wrapping around her trembling body as she cried out. “I don’t want to be afraid anymore. I don’t want to be alone. Please, just help me. Please just take over, I’m so tired.”

Her cries turned to hiccupping wails of pain and exhaustion. Her body went limp, but with Adam holding her, she didn’t fall. The voice echoed in her head. “I love you. We are one.”

In a flash of brilliant light, Ella felt no pain, no agony, just peace. She opened her eyes and the world looked different. The colors around her were more pronounced and vibrant, she blinked, her perspective was different, as if she weren’t at ground level anymore. And the world was moving, spinning…then she heard it. The beating of giant wings against the wind. Finally, she looked down at herself and saw the body of a black dragon.

Was she dreaming? Did Adam pick her up and fly with her? But her inner voice answered back. “This is us. We are power and grace.”

Without another word, the dragon landed, and Ella’s physical form surged forward. As soon as she was whole again, she collapsed, with Adam catching her before she could hit the ground.

She was exhausted, but it was different this time. It was as if the weight of the world had been lifted from her shoulders for the first time in her life. She was burden free and weightless. She’d never known one moment of real relaxation and as she laid her head in Adam’s lap she smiled as she drifted off.

Adam’s voice trembled as he stroked her hair. “You did so good, love. You are amazing. And I’m so lucky to have found you after all these centuries.”

Ella stoodin a suite at the Chalice Hotel. After a week of learning how to control her shifts and Adam spending every spare moment reminding her just how much he wanted her, she’d finally felt refreshed enough to go back to civilization. Now she stood in front of a full-length mirror, admiring the shimmering black dress that hugged every curve of her body. “I look amazing.” She beamed.

“Of course, you do. Why do you think I can’t get enough of you?” Adam chuckled.

She turned to give him a playful look. “I meant the dress.”

“Oh, yeah. I like that too. But I’ll be happier when it’s crumpled up on the bedroom floor.”

She blushed and turned back to the mirror. “So, what’s the occasion?”

“Well, for one, I’d like the world to meet my mate.” Adam stood and moved to stand behind her in the mirror. “And it’s time for me to stop hiding.”
