And now?

“Doesn’t it feel strange not to have this trial hanging over our heads anymore?”

“There’s still sentencing—”

“I don’t see the point in coming back here for that,” Moira murmured, picking at the sheets. “I’d rather he just… go away. We have too much going on, anyway.”

I smiled, letting out a relieved breath through my nose. “I think it feels good, Moira. Like I said, it’s over.”

“It’s over,” she repeated, exhaling deeply. She turned to me, smiling. “Now what should we do?”

“Right now, or just in general?” I laughed.

She gave me a seductive smile that immediately set my blood roiling.

“I can think of a few things we could do right now,” she purred, rolling onto her side. Her fingers snaked over my bare chest as she looked up into my eyes.

I took her hand, holding it over my heart as I kissed her, softly at first, before rolling over on top of her.

“I love you,” she whispered.

“I love you,” I replied, and it felt so good to say.

I hadn’t stopped saying it to either of them.

Day started calling me Dad a few months ago. It’d happened mostly by accident, and I thought nothing of it. He was spending more time with friends and their fathers, and I figured he was just used to hearing his friends say it.

But he started calling me Dad in earnest, and I was damn proud that I hadn’t stopped him. He trusted me, and there was nothing I wouldn’t do for that kid.

He was my son, and I meant to make it official.

Moira had no idea what I had in the safe in our bedroom back home. I’d tucked the ring box behind a box of documents, hidden from sight. I was going to propose over Christmas, but with the trial coming up I decided against it. I hadn’t wanted to burden her with anything over the past few weeks.

But when we got home, I had every intention of getting down on one knee and asking her to be my wife.

I’d never been more sure of anything in my life.

“Do you think King misses me?” she asked softly.

“Is that really what you’re thinking about right now?” I chuckled. I’d pushed the robe down over her shoulder, her full breasts now on display.

She gave me a cat-like grin as she wrapped her arms around my neck, kissing me soundly.

Eight months ago, I’d been a bachelor, dead-set on being alone for the rest of my life.

Now, I was in the arms of the woman I loved more than anything in the world, and the future was wide open to us.

“I can’t wait to take you home,” I whispered onto her skin.

“I am home,” she breathed. “I’m always home when I’m with you.”
