Finally the teapot emitted a soft, luminescent glow, its shimmering contents shifting like the sands of time it was named after. I carefully poured the liquid into a delicate porcelain cup, then approached the broken creature who needed repairing.

“Alice...”

The moment I said her name out loud, I questioned who the voice belonged to. There was so much concern... so muchfeeling. Who was this man? The voice sounded so foreign to me that it took me a heartbeat and a half to recognize it was my own.

I sank onto the side of the bed and gently lifted my young apprentice’s head, then brought the cup to her lips.

“Alice, I need you to drink this.”

My voice was barely above a whisper, betraying a vulnerability seldom shown.

A vulnerability I’d forgotten myself capable of possessing.

A vulnerability I hadn’t felt since I’d done the same thing with my dying wife and each of my children.

I needed this one to live.

My throat swelled up and my eyes stung and became glassy.

“Alice, please wake up. You were right. I need you more than you need me. And right now, I need you to live.”

I felt so useless...so helpless. My hope was dwindling, and I could hear the desperation in my voice.

Perhaps that’s why Alice fought so hard to open her eyes and see for herself if it was actually me who was speaking.

“Jack?”

Her voice was weak, barely above a whisper, but it sent relief through my body like a soft rumble of thunder. I hadn’t realized how much I longed to hear the sound of her voice until I thought I might not hear it again.

“Shhh...don’t speak. Just drink.”

To my surprise, she parted her lips for me.

And it wasn’t to shower me with insults.

As the Timekeeper’s Tonic tea went down her throat, I watched Alice intently, hoping for some sign of improvement. The tonic seemed to flow down her throat and directly through her body, its magic working subtly, but working nonetheless. Slowly but surely, color began to return to her cheeks, and her breathing steadied. I watched it knit together the frayed edges of her vitality.

“Easy now,” I cautioned, and took the cup away.

“Thirsty...”

“I know. There’s no need to gulp. I made plenty of tea.”

From the crook of my arm, she gave a faint nod, and I brought the cup back to her mouth. With every labored swallow, I watched over Alice with an intensity born from centuries of solitude and the weight of my actions. Unable to ignore every stray drop of tonic that dribbled down her blood-stained chin, I made a silent vow to do everything in my power to protect this fragile human.

She didn’t know it yet, but she’d unwittingly become a part of my eternal existence.

A blood bond had been created the moment I pushed my bleeding fingers into her cunt, then fucked her with my blood-covered cock while I drank from her.

Was it unconventional?

Absolutely.

But it was still a blood exchange.

This knowledge both terrified and excited me.

As I held her in my arms and coaxed her to take more small sips of the Timekeeper’s Tonic, my mind roamed to thoughts of her pinned beneath me, her hips twisting and begging me for more. Her cries of pleasure echoing in my mind.
