I bit back a groan, unable to shake the images.

The guilt I felt for taking exactly what I wanted from her was tempered by the thrill of doing the same exact thing. Not only that, but the desire to have our bond grow even stronger.

I needed more of her.

But first she had to live.

Once the cup was emptied, I placed it on the bedside table and tucked the blanket closer around Alice, making sure she was warm enough.

I never minded the cold. In truth, I slept better when there was a bit of a chill in the air. But this Alice was from the land of sun-drenched beaches and palm trees. I lifted my hand and used my magic to coax another log onto the fire.

“What happened? Where are we?”

“We’re in my chambers. You lost a lot of blood.”

“Because ofyou,” she murmured, as if realizing for the first time what had transpired between us. Her eyes narrowed as she looked up at me, a mixture of anger and desire flickering within their depths. “You couldn’t control yourself, could you?”

“Believe me, Alice,” I replied, my voice tinged with regret, “I never intended for things to go so far. It was a lapse in judgment.”

“Is that all it was?” she challenged, her gaze never leaving mine. “Just a lapse in judgment? Because it sure seemed like you were enjoying yourself.”

‘Enjoying myself’ was an understatement. I’d craved her tender flesh from the moment I laid eyes on her. As much as I wanted to feel her heat again and again, I couldn’t allow myself to give in to such base desires. Not when there was so much at stake.

“It was a lapse in judgment,” I repeated, quickly regaining my composure. “One that won’t be repeated.”

She lifted a flirtatious brow.

“I wouldn’t mind repeating it...as long as you don’t kill me next time.”

“There will not be a next time,” I said, my tone sharp as a knife.

Alice shot me a disappointed frown.

“Don’t you ever get tired of acting so self-righteous? It’s infuriating.”

The thought of never experiencing the taste of her blood or the feel of her body against mine again was almost unbearable. Her taste was still on my tongue.

So sweet... so fucking sweet.

But I knew I had no choice. For the sake of my queen, my realm, and my honor—and for Alice’s own safety—Ihadto find a way to resist her.

No matter how impossible it seemed.

“I won’t apologize for holding myself to high standards. That’s why this isn’t going to happen again,” I explained patiently. “We still have work to do. The fate of Wonderland depends on us. We cannot afford to let physical entanglements cloud our judgment.”

The corner of Alice’s mouth twitched playfully.

“I dunno...wrestling and sword fighting are pretty physical entanglements, don’t you think?”

I narrowed my eyes at her, fighting to keep from grinning at her brazen reply.

“You know what I mean.”

The flickering flames cast dancing shadows on the walls, on the bed, and on her face, creating a sensual ambiance that only served to remind me of the darkness we were both entangled in.

“Whatever,” she scoffed before turning away from me. “I’ll make sure not to cause another lapse in your judgment.”

She shoved her face against the pillow and let out a groan, and I knew it was because of the bites on her neck and her cheek. The sound of her being in pain made my resolve waver.
