“Sorry if it’s a disappointment, but the only hole we’re interested in exploring is the Rabbit Hole. Since my powers are fully restored, I’m on my way there now.”

My eyes widened. “Oh! Okay. I hope it goes well. Be careful.”

“I’ll be more careful if I’m not distracted.”

“I’m not sure I know how to help you with that,” I said, putting one hand on my hip. “We all know that every time I distract you, you lose your powers.”

“That’s not the type of distraction I was referring to.” He tilted his head to one side, chewing on his bottom lip, silently deliberating on what he was about to say to me. “Tell me where you were last night, and then I’ll know if I can trust you with what answers I get from the Rabbit Hole.”

I glanced down at my sneakers, remembering Jack’s specific instructions to me...

“Don’t breathe a word to anyone.”

“Chess...I swore I wouldn’t tell a soul.”

A glimmer of a grin tugged at the corner of his mouth. “Alice, I’m a demon. I don’t have a soul. Technically, you’ll have kept your promise if you tell me where you were.”

I let out a long sigh, wondering when—not if—what I said next would bite me in the ass.

I did seem to be getting bitten a lot lately.

“Fine. I spent the night with Jack. I guess you smelled him all over me, huh?”

“Surprisingly, no. You washed away the evidence quite well. I just wanted to smell you,” he purred, his gaze softening.

I furrowed my brow at him.

“Then how did you know I didn’t sleep in my bed?”

He gave a nonchalant shrug. “I occasionally check in on you at night to make sure you’re safe.”

As endearing as it was, Chess and I were going to have to have a serious talk about boundaries. And just as I had that thought, he stepped closer to me...close enough to caress my cheek.

“Areyou safe? Jack isn’t exactly known for his tender heart. He didn’t hurt you, did he?”

“Not too bad,” I said, sugarcoating the truth. “I’d let you see for yourself, but I don’t want to jeopardize your mission.”

“Fair enough,” Chess nodded with a soulful gaze. “But you’ll tell me if you ever feel it’s going too far, won’t you?”

“I will. I promise.”

He gathered me into his arms, curling them protectively around my body, then nuzzled his cheek against my head. I could hear a low, deep rumble in his chest as he purred in satisfaction.

“I’m probably going to ask you about Jack every now and then, just to be sure. You said it yourself—I’m a nosy cat who likes to stick his nose where it doesn’t belong.”

“That’s...that’s really sweet of you,” I whispered. My heart melted as I realized just how much he cared.

“If he hurts you, I won’t be sweet. You’ve seen what I’m capable of. Jack might have fangs and the Vorpal Sword, but I have fangs andtenVorpal Swords.”

He stepped back and curled his fingers into claws, lightly dragging them down my shoulders and over my breasts. I threw my arms around him and kissed him on the cheek.

“Thank you, Chess. Thanks for...for being exactly the way you are, you nosy cat.”

He gave me one last affectionate nuzzle before peeling himself away from me.

“I should go. There’s somewhere else I have to stick my nose, unfortunately. But I shouldn’t be too terribly long. I’ll let you know as soon as I have news to share.”

“Okay. Be careful!”
