She’d be taken to Colby Ballard’s office, one way or another.

“What’s happening?”She inched forward. The sheet trailed behind her.

“Your brother escaped.”

Her mouth opened.Her eyes widened.Then she—she shook her head.Instant denial.“No.”

“Yes, sweetheart, he did.”While I was fucking you, your brother broke out of jail.“He was injured during an attack from another inmate.”We’ll have to see if that attack was planned.Maybe the other inmate was in on the escape.“Lane was transferred to the infirmary.I’m guessing the staff there didn’t have him properly restrained. They thought he wasn’t a threat. They were wrong.”

“No.”Another shake of her head. Her mouth snapped closed.

“He’s on the run.A full manhunt is about to take place.”If it wasn’t already taking place. He put the phone onto the nightstand and grabbed his boxers.Oliver hauled them on.Then dragged up his pants.“You have to get dressed.”

“No.”

“Colby wants you in his office.I’m sorry but he…he wants to question you.”

“Lane didn’t break out of jail. He’s waiting for his trial.”

No, he wasn’t.

Oliver yanked on his shirt.Buttoned it with quick flicks of his fingers.

“He didn’t break out,” Lark insisted.

“Yes, baby, he did.And Colby basically gave me two options.I bring you in—or he has a team come and get you.”He tucked in his shirt with angry shoves of his hands.“I’m not being separated from you.I will stay with you every moment.I willnotlet agents haul you off in handcuffs.”

“Innocent people don’t run.”

His hands fell to his sides.

“He was waiting for his day in court. He was…” She wet her lips.“I was going to prove his innocence.Lane can’t—he can’t run.”

He would run if he thought you were in danger. And I told him you were.I should have seen this coming.Dammit.

“The cops will hunt him.”Her hand fisted around the sheet section she clutched to her chest.“Everyone will hunt him. They won’t care about bringing him back in alive.”

She wasn’t wrong. Not with the stories that had spread about Lane Lawson. The man would be considered extremely dangerous.

“They’ll kill him,” she said. Her eyes filled with tears.“They’ll kill my brother.”

He wanted to tell her that wouldn’t happen. But he didn’t want any more lies.

When her knees started to buckle, he caught her under her arms and held her upright.

This was one major cluster.Oliver gripped his phone as his eyes remained on the closed bathroom door.Behind that door, Lark was dressing. He’d brought her fresh clothes from the suitcase in the guest room closet.

He feared she was also crying behind the closed door.

“Yo,” Memphis answered on the second ring.“You good?Your girl safe? You—”

“Things are far from good,” he shot back in a low growl.“Lane Lawson just escaped.”

“What?”

“Executive Assistant Director Ballard is demanding I bring Lark in for questioning.”
