“Does she have something to do with—”

“No,” Oliver cut through Memphis’s question, voice firm.“Not a damn thing. The escape just happened. She was with you and Midas, then she was with me.”Fucking me.His breath shuddered out.“I need you on this.We both know you’re the best bounty hunter that pretty much ever breathed.”

“Flattery will get you everywhere.”But his voice was just as grim as Oliver’s had been moments before.“If I’m hunting Lane, you know I can’t focus on Nate Quest.”

Yes, he did.And he hated pulling Memphis off the search for Nate.“I’m staying with her.I’m also going to make sure that Midas is in the shadows.”He’d already texted his friend and updated him on everything.Midas would be trailing them and making sure not to be spotted. Not unless he was needed. Then Midas would come in with a fury.“I need you to find Lane.If someone else does…” He stopped.Had he just heard a sob from the bathroom?

“If someone else does, you think they’ll shoot first and screw any plans to bring Lark’s brother back to a cell?”

That was exactly what he thought.“I’m worried he won’t surrender easily.”

“They never do, man. They never do.”

The bathroom door opened.Smudges lined Lark’s eyes, and her skin seemed far too pale.

“I need you to do this for me,” Oliver said to Memphis.“I’ll pay any price.”

“We’ll work that shit out later.Right now, just know I’m on it.”Memphis ended the call.

Oliver lowered his phone.“Are you okay?”he asked Lark.

“I didn’t help him escape.”

“I know, sweetheart.”All he wanted was to pull her into his arms.

“It makes him look even guiltier, doesn’t it?Running?”

Yeah.It did.And they both knew it.

Guilty as sin.

Chapter Thirteen

“Where is Lane Lawson?”Executive Assistant Director Colby Ballard leaned aggressively over the small conference room table. Both of his palms were flat on that table, and the wedding ring on his left hand gleamed dully in the light.“Where the hell is your brother right now, Lark?”

She kept her spine straight. Her chin up.Shehatedthat she’d almost fallen before Oliver in the bedroom. Her knees had just gotten too weak. She’d had a terrible image of Lane.

Dead Lane.A bullet straight to the heart.Just like our dad.

“Lark, answer me.You visit your brother all the time. You planned this with him, didn’t you?You know where he is.You know—”

“Lark didn’t plan anything with him,” Oliver cut through Colby’s words to say.“I’ve told you that already.Settle down. She’s cooperating. You don’t need to terrorize her.”He advanced from the watchful position he’d taken near the left wall.

Colby immediately whirled toward him.“Did you just tell your supervisor to ‘settle down’—did I hear that shit correctly?”

“You absolutely heard correctly.Good for you.”

Colby’s body stiffened even more.

“Don’t berate her.Ease the hell up,” Oliver ordered, seemingly unintimated by the man who was his supervisor.“What do you want, for her to lawyer up and tell you nothing?”His gaze slid to Lark.Lingered.There was a clear message in his eyes.

He’s telling me to lawyer up and say nothing.

“The longer her brother is out there, the more dangerous this situation becomes!Law enforcement personnel are hunting him as we speak.”Colby spun toward her.His hands slammed onto the table again.“Do you want your brother brought back in a body bag?”

“N-no.”That was the last thing she wanted and the very thing that she feared the most.

“Then tell me what you know.Tell me what you planned.Tell me—”
