“I planned to prove his innocence.”Her sweaty palms rolled over her jean-covered thighs.“I was going to get him out.Find evidence to exonerate him.”That had been her whole plan. From day one.Prove he’s innocent.Free Lane.

Ever since she’d been a teen, she’d made lists. They helped her to stay organized. To stay focused. When life was chaos, her lists were the map she used for navigating. So when her brother had been taken from her, she’d started a new list.

Step one: Get proof that Lane is innocent.

Step two: Find someone to help you—someone who has expertise in hunting killers. She’d tried hiring two PIs.They’d turned up nothing.

Step three: Don’t give up.Ever.

So she hadn’t.

Step four: Do whatever is necessary to free Lane.

Whatever was necessary.

Thewhatever was necessarypart had led her to the Ice Breakers. To Memphis.Back to Oliver.

Step five: Sometimes, lies are the only weapons we have.

Her breath shuddered out.And her hands curled into fists. Her nails bit into her palms.

“Innocent people don’t run,” Colby announced.

She flinched. She’d said those exact words to Oliver.

“You know who does run?People who are guilty.People who don’t want to face the punishment for their crimes—they are the ones who run.”He glared at her.“The last time you went to see your brother, what did you talk about?”

She could speak the truth.“The Ice Breakers.”

“What?”

She glanced toward Oliver.Found his eyes on her.Staring straight at him, she said, “I talked to Lane about the Ice Breakers.I wanted them to help with his case.”A slow exhale.“I told Lane not to give up.He was going to get out.”Just wait, Lane. You’ll be free soon.

Only her brother hadn’t waited.

“Well, he damn well did get out, didn’t he?”Colby threw his hands into the air.“Bastard stole a car that belonged to one of the nurses in the infirmary. He put on green scrubs, took the dumbass’s ID and keys and was able to sneak right out of a high-security facility like it was freaking child’s play.”His eyes shot fire at her.“You expect me to believe he did that all on his own?”

“I don’t expect you to believe anything I tell you.”Again, that was the truth.“You’ve never believed me before when I said that Lane was innocent. You’re not going to believe me now when I say that I wasn’t involved in his escape.”She wasn’t sure what he hoped to gain from this interrogation.“I can’t help you.I don’t know where my brother is.”

“He’s never far from you.”A shake of Colby’s head.“That’s been your life story.Where you go, he goes.First with foster families, then with colleges.Hell, he had the chance to set up his business in France, but instead, he sold his house and moved in with you.”

“That was just temporary. He was buying a bigger place.Getting architectural plans drawn up—”

“You’re a liar, Lark.”

She sucked in a breath.

“Watch it,”Oliver warned.

“You’re a liar,” Colby claimed again, apparently not in the mood to watch anything.“And your brother is a killer.”

“No, he isn’t.”Fine.She’d confess all. She’d tell him about her father’s shooting. She’d tell him—

“Didn’t you lie to Special Agent Oliver Foxx?”Colby waved to Oliver.

Her breath seemed to freeze.

“Didn’t you lie to Memphis Camden?Your lie is what convinced the Ice Breakers to help you in your quest to find that so-called ‘real’ Bridal Killer, isn’t it?”A brief pause.“See, I already knew about the Ice Breakers.Just like I already knew you were a liar.”
