Nate’s voice slithered through his mind. What will it be like for you, Special Agent Foxx, when you see her everywhere…and nowhere?

The sonofabitch. He’d put a rope around her throat.Around her throat. No one is taking Lark from me.“I was right there,” he muttered.“You were attacked again, with me—”

Her hold tightened on him.“Yes, you were there.Thank God, you were there. You saved me.If I’d been on my own, I-I…” She swallowed.“I didn’t have a gun.”

Because Colby had made that one of his conditions before they’d left the Bureau. No weapons for Lark.Colby really thinks she will turn on anyone when it comes to her brother. But Lark wasn’t some monster.

She was…

Everything.

His thumb lightly brushed over her bruise.“The doctor wants you to stay twenty-four hours for observation.”

“No.”An immediate denial.“I don’t want to stay here.It’s too open.Too many people.Too many strangers.”

“You arehurt.”

“I was just…dazed,” she corrected.“For a moment. To tell you the truth, I can barely remember even falling to the floor.I-I do remember the rope around me.Then you shooting Nate in the shoulder to get him off me.”Her lips pressed together.

I remember everything.Every second had been burned into his mind in vivid color.“What you’ve just described, sweetheart?Classic concussion symptoms.Being dazed, not being able to recall what happened right after the attack…”

“I can heal from a concussion just as well at your place as I can here.”

His place. He wanted her at his place. He wanted to scoop her into his arms and rush away with her.Absolutely at the top of his to-do list.

A quick knock sounded on the exam room door.He turned because he expected to see the doctor coming in to talk more with them. But instead, Colby poked his head inside.First his head, then his whole body.

“Lark.”Colby’s gaze slid over her.Lingered on her throat. The throat that Oliver still touched.

Slowly, Oliver let his hand fall away from her.

Colby’s attention shifted to him.“Heard that Nate Quest is still breathing because of you.”

“I took down the perp.”

“You stopped the perp from blowing his brains out.”

Lark sucked in a sharp breath.

I have questions for Nate.Death wasn’t taking him.Not…yet.

“Cops just searched his place in Colorado. They found a manifesto of sorts on his computer.Manifesto, suicide note.Whatever you want to call it.”Colby advanced, but his steps seemed a little uncertain.“I know he told you that he’d received a phone call telling him to come down here.Saying that he knew Lark was going to use you to prove her brother’s innocence.Jase briefed me on all that.Said the guy kept going on and on about the call before Nate surprised him with that sucker punch at the hotel.”

Lark shivered.

“That gown is too damn thin,” Oliver groused. Why the hell did people always have to wear those BS paper gowns in hospitals?Hospitals were freakingcold.Oliver shouldered out of his coat and put it around Lark’s shoulders.

“Nate wanted people to know what he was doing. He even left a note telling his parents that he was going to be with Casey again.”Colby’s lips pulled down.“Seems to me that the man was planning to kill himself before he came to town.Just wanted to…take someone else with him first.”

“Me,” Lark said.“He came all the way here to kill me.”

Colby nodded.“Only he’s still breathing. And so are you.”

“Because of Oliver,” Lark added instantly.“Without him, I-I would be dead.”

Without me, you never would have been in that shop.

“He’s a real hero,” Colby murmured.
