Oliver’s phone rang. The text he’d gotten a few moments before? It had been from Midas, letting Oliver know that he’d closed in on Memphis’s location.Midas and Memphis’s wife Eliza were on the hunt.

Not that they’d gone alone.Midas had made some fast calls and created his own mini-team.People who would follow his orders completely.People he trusted.

If Midas trusted you, then you were good to go.

“I think this call will confirm—” He broke off. That wasn’t Midas calling.

He hadn’t assigned any ringtones to his callers. He never did.The caller wasn’t Midas.

Jase.

Oliver took the call even as Lark watched him with her stark, but beautiful eyes.“Jase,” he rasped.“I’ve been trying to get hold of you.I’ve got questions about the crime scene at the hotel—”

“I lost him.”

Oliver held Lark’s stare.“Say again?”

“Blain Montgomery gave me the slip! And the sonofabitch is twisted, boss.Twisted.Man has all these videos of women who look like Lark Lawson. The women are all tied up and being strangled.Do you hear me?Tied up.Strangled.” His words rushed out in rapid-fire succession.“Found them when I was looking for him.Guy said he was going to sleep.Heard a loud thump in this big-ass suite of his, and I came running to make sure everything was all right. It wasn’t all right. He’s in the wind.”

You’d better be bullshitting me.“We don’t have eyes on Blain?”

“No, no, he left through a connecting door thatshouldhave been secured and guarded.Only the guard was knocked out.Blain is gone.I’ve been searching and searching, but I can’t find him.Colby is gonna nail my ass to the wall.”

Talk about a clusterfuck. And, yes, Colby was gonna be far from pleased.Ass nailing would commence.

“He left his laptop behind. The videos were running—he was watching them before he vanished.Bastard left a video playing like that was normal shit.”

Oliver’s heart beat faster.Faster.“How long has he been gone?”

“About…an hour.”

Are you serious right now?And you’re just alerting me?

“Thought—hopedI could find him myself.I reviewed the security feeds just like you and I did before, but he’s not on them.I’ve got a full search running. But, hell, I don’t even know if he went willingly. There are signs of a struggle.I’m thinking…Lane could have gotten to him.”

Oliver shook his head.Impossible.

“Lane could have forced the guy to leave with him.We could be looking at a hostage situation.I know I need to call Executive Assistant Director Ballard, but I had to report to you first, boss.Dammit, I wanted to find him!”

Yes, he was sure that Jase had.

“Either Lane has Blain or Blain is coming after Lark on his own.”Jase’s breath heaved.“Is Lark safe?I-I heard on the news she was hurt pretty badly.Does Ballard have enough guards on her at the hospital?”He paused to draw another breath after his frantic tumble of words.“Are you close to her right now?If not, can you get to her?”

“She’s already with me.We’re at my house.”

“You’re not at the hospital?But—”

“Are there other agents at the hotel?”

“Yes, yes, two more. They’re still searching for Blain with the local cops and hotel security, but he’sgone.” Desperation laced each word.“I was actually driving to your house—almost there—I was afraid he might try to hide in wait for you or some shit.I’m on the way, boss.I’ll give you backup.”

Blain was on the move.Could be heading here.“If he’s coming for her, I’ll be ready for him.You go ahead and tell—”

The line went dead.

Tell Colby.Get more agents over here.

His front doorbell started ringing.Over and over and over.
