“Oliver?”Fear laced his name as Lark stiffened.“What’s happening?”

No time to break gently into this.“Blain Montgomery ditched his guards.”

The ringing stopped.

Dead silence.

“Midas isn’t watching the house.”Because he’s rescuing Memphis right now.“The Feds are concentrated at the hospital on a stakeout that is going to fail.”He should have gotten someone else to watch his house after he’d sent Midas on his mission.Fuck.My fault.“I want you to stay in here.Lock the door, understand?Do not open it for anyone but me.”

She pulled in a breath.Squared her shoulders.Nodded.“Tell me that you have an extra gun in this house.”

Oh, he did.He pulled his backup weapon from his ankle holster. He shoved the backup into Lark’s hands.

His main weapon had been taken after the shooting at the florist shop.Bagged and tagged as evidence. But he had another gun in his bedroom. He’d be getting that one.

No more bell ringing.Just a silence he didn’t like.He had to check the perimeter. The alarms are set.But none had gone off. That meant no one was inside the house, right?

But a man had been in the back of Lark’s car in that lot.A killer who might have been able to gain access to all the vics’ vehicles without leaving a trace behind.

A man who might be attempting to get into my house at this very moment?

“If anyone but me tries to get through the bedroom door, shoot,” he ordered. His fingers tightened around hers.“And for the record, I love you more than anything in this world.”

Her eyes widened.“You’re telling menow?”

Better now than never.“I loved you months ago.Loved you from the first moment I saw you. Will always love you.”He kissed her.Whirled for the door.“Do not unlock it unless you hear my voice.”He barreled out and yanked the door closed behind him. Then he rushed toward his bedroom.Oliver yanked open the nightstand.Pulled out his weapon and loaded it as—

Gunshots blasted. They came from the front of the house.A fast succession of thunderous blasts that had to be heard by someone else in the neighborhood.Oliver rushed out of the bedroom.Down the hallway.

The front door flew inward.

An alarm shrieked.Loud and piercing.

He shot the door. The lock. That’s why the gunfire—

“Federal agent!”Oliver bellowed.“I’m armed and you need tofreeze!”

Blain Montgomery stumbled forward. From his crouched position near the wall, Oliver could see the man’s upper body.Blain stared at him, blinked, then slowly lifted the gun in his hand. His fingers shook and trembled and—

Boom.

The bullet blasted rightthroughBlain’s chest. Not because Oliver had shot him.He hadn’t fired.Someone else had fired from behind Blain, and the bullet tore straight through him and pierced a painting that hung on the wall.Blain’s eyes widened, right before he slammed face-first into the floor.

“Boss!”Jase yelled. He flew forward and stood over Blain.“Boss, I arrived just as he was busting in!”His frantic gaze found Oliver.“Are you all right?”

“How did you get here so fast?”

“I-I told you, I was just a few minutes away—already on my way here…” He gulped.“Almost didn’t get the shot off in time.Jesus, almostnot in time.”

Oliver kept his weapon pointed at Jase.

Jase inched toward Blain. He kicked the man’s leg.

Nothing.

“Oh, God.”Jase swallowed.Swayed.“I’ve never killed anyone before.”He put his gun on the entrance table and grabbed for Blain. He caught the guy.Rolled him over.Jase’s hand went to his throat.“I-I think I feel a pulse!”

Blood soaked Blain’s chest where the bullet had ripped free on its way out of him.
