He nods his head. “Apparently that’s why there’s really no time limit. I just hope these other couples have the same kinds of things that are just as far away.”

I nod and eye them. I’m heartened to see that they look as shell-shocked and worried as we do.

“I think they have them.” I shrug. “Nobody else looks any happier, that’s for sure.”

He grins. “We got this.” The waitress wanders over and smiles cheekily at Trace, making my fingers itch to reach for his fingers so she quits looking at him like that.

“You guys want something to eat?”

He turns to me with a raised brow. “Should we? I haven’t seen anyone leave so I’m sure we have time.”

I shake my head no. “I don’t think so. Maybe we should just have some coffee and plan our route.”

He nods and we both order black coffee but when it comes, I pour half of it out into the extra cup I asked for. Then I add a significant amount of cream that turns the coffee a light caramel and add two packets of sugar.

He lifts a dark brow and laughs. “I see you like creamer not coffee in the morning.”

I grunt. I know that it’s bad for me but it tastes oh so good and I moan when I take my first hot sip.

I glance up to find Trace’s gaze on me, his fingers clenched on the cup of coffee he’s holding in his hands. He shakes his head like he’s waking up from something then he takes a big gulp and sets the cup down.

“Let’s figure out where we’re going first.”

“I think we should go to the farthest one first.”

He nods. “That makes sense. Then we’ll get the closer stuff on the way back.”

“Looks like we’re on our way to get some fudge at the Hideaway.”

I suck down my weak coffee and groan, arching my back and rubbing the sore muscles. I got thrown from one of my horses, Jackrabbit, the other day and I’m still feeling the aches and pains today.

I look up to find Trace eyeing me. “You okay?”

That breathless feeling I always get around him washes over me. I can barely make my mouth form the words.

“I’m good. Jackrabbit lived up to his name the other day.”

“You got thrown?” He sits up and eyes me like he’s about to grab me or something.

“I’m fine. It’s not the first time I’ve been thrown.”

If anything his firm mouth tightens even further. “Your brother should be the one doing that stuff.”

I stiffen, the male chauvinist side of him rearing its ugly head and making me want to kick his butt.

“I don’t need my brother to ride my own dang horse. Jackrabbit just gets a little bored sometimes and works it out on me. It’s no big deal.”

“It is a big deal. Where is your brother now?”

“He’s in his last year of vet school. You know that.”

He grunts and throws money down on the table for the drinks. Then he stands and eyes me, something strange and dark in his eyes.

“I’d never let you get hurt.”

“You can’t promise something like that. Life doesn’t work that way.”

“You’d be surprised.” He stomps off and I follow along behind him, my eyes staying fixed on his rigid figure as I follow him out the door.
