I walked to my desk and felt my phone vibrate in my purse.

I was sure it was Daniel trying to lure me to his office already, but when I looked down at my phone, it was that unknown number again. I opened the text in a panic and saw a picture of Daniel and me. It was a pic I had posted to my social media page.

All the joy and love were ripped from my heart when I stared at the words underneath them.

You know I don’t like to share Lena. Don’t make me have to get rid of him. You’re mine.

I had to use my chair to steady myself, but I forgot there were wheels underneath, so I slipped and almost fell to the ground. Had Brandon not been there to catch me, I likely would have fallen flat on my face.

“Are you okay?” Worry was etched onto his face.

I nodded, but I could not speak. The words were trapped in the iron hold that Marcus used to have on me years ago. I turned my screen off and looked away from Brandon.

He was coming after the people I loved.

This could not be happening. How could I have been so stupid? I had allowed myself to drop my guard for one moment, and now this was happening. I had put Daniel into the line of fire, and now I risked him getting hurt.

I knew Marcus very well. I knew the evil that he was capable of.

“I need some air.” I pulled myself from his head and stumbled out of the office. I had just made it around the corner when I crashed into Lisa. “Sorry.” I tried to sidestep her, but she blocked my path.

“Woah, hold up,” Lisa and I were not friends, but somewhere along the lines, we had become somewhat cordial. However, I would be a fool to think that she was actually concerned. “What happened?”

“Nothing, I just need some air.” I gripped my phone tighter. “Excuse me.”

I tried to move past her again, but she blocked my path once more.

“You look like you’re about to cry.”

“I’m fine.”

“No, you’re not,” she held her ground. “You look like you’ve seen a ghost.”

I might as well have. “Look, you don’t have to give this fake concerned act. I know we aren’t friends, and you have made that abundantly clear to me. Please move.”

“Come here,” she grabbed my hand and pulled me to the nearest bathroom. Once we were in, she checked all the stalls to make sure that no one was there. “I know that something is up. I’m not sure what it is, but I know that you’re with Daniel. Did he hurt you?”

What in the world was she talking about?

“I don’t know what you think you know, but whatever it is, you’re wrong.” I tried to walk out of the bathroom, but she stopped me again.

“Please, don’t insult me by lying. I knew from the moment I saw you two together that there was something there. He gave you fuck me eyes every time you walked into a room and vice versa. You aren’t subtle about it. But at least now you finally took the damn plunge and kissed the bastard.”

I was dumbfounded.

“I’m a cybersecurity major; my dad was a Navy SEAL. He taught me how to look for small details and things others may not pick up on.”

Now, her cold and callous exterior made sense. Being raised by a SEAL taught you things, and she had likely seen and heard things that others could only fathom in their minds.

“Fine, I’m sleeping with my boss. And I know that you don’t like me very much, Lisa, and quite frankly, I don’t like you. But I know you admire and respect Daniel. So, that being said, I’m asking you, pleading with you, in fact, not to say anything.”

She gave me this incredulous look. “I don’t care who either of you are fucking. I was checking on you because you looked so upset.”

I paused for a minute.

“Shit.” She cursed under her breath, “I know you have zero reason to trust me. We aren’t friends, but I am a big believer that women must always protect women. Did Mr. Sinclair do something to hurt you?”

I shook my head, “No, no. That’s not what I’m upset about at all, and I would appreciate it if you would keep your nose out of my business.”
