“I want a place of my own. For my baby. And this is what I can do right now to make money.” She pointed to the dolls. She didn’t tell him how she actually loved what she did, how it seemed to draw out a hidden strength within her. “I don’t really know how to do anything else, and I don’t have a high school diploma, and I’m not sure how to get one.”

He stared at her for a long time. “If you’re serious, I can help you study for your GED. But you can’t tell Mare. And she can’t know you’re doing this kind of ... work. She may try to come across as a progressive Christian, but trust me—she’s not.”

More secrets. Rae didn’t know how many secrets a person could hold inside before they’d explode.

She looked Ben in the eyes. “I’m serious. I want to do it.” And she did. She knew whatever she did in life, having a GED was important.

Ben gave her the first real smile she’d seen from him. “Then let’s put your time to better use.”

CHAPTER 52

RAE

2024

As much as she tried to avoid it, Rae kept checking her cell phone in between clients. It was Monday afternoon, and she had received the text Bobby promised the Friday before. The text only included a different number, likely from another burner phone, which Dayton told her he would look into. She had sent the recording of her smashing the flash drive into tiny bits with a hammer. So far, she’d had no response, but she wasn’t sure if she was supposed to get one.

Dayton was right. There was no point in destroying it if he had the video saved elsewhere, and she started to believe her initial instincts were incorrect. Maybe they weren’t only trying to scare them into compliance. It was almost like they had toyed with them by pitting her against Dayton, trying to get her to break the tenuous trust she was attempting to build with him. Like they wanted them to feel isolated, which would make them more vulnerable.

Rae felt vulnerable enough without their help. She thought about the weekend, how she had met up with Angel Saturday night for drinksand dancing at their favorite queer club. Angel encouraged her to invite Dayton so she could “check his intentions” before her trip, which Rae grudgingly did, fully expecting him to politely decline. To her surprise, he showed. And the way he was slamming shot after shot, it was like he wanted to escape himself. She didn’t question it too much because she was doing the same. In some ways, she liked seeing the looser side of him. He had even tucked a dollar into a male go-go dancer’s neon-green G-string, she and Angel hooting the entire time.

Afterward, she and Dayton shared a Lyft back to her place, both of them too tipsy to drive. Lily had stayed the night with a friend, so they didn’t have to be quiet when Dayton bent Rae over the side of her couch, yanked off her thong, and drove into her from behind with a fierceness that made her sore the next day.

Rae shuddered at the memory and pushed it to the back of her mind. She had to get ready for her last client of the day, who was new, and then Angel would be off the rest of the week for her Bahamas trip.

She looked over the information for the new client again on her office computer: Troy Farris, age forty, into canes and bondage. From his submitted photo, he was built like a truck. Figured. Seemed like the bigger the man, the more they enjoyed being broken by a small woman.

Angel was looking over her trip itinerary again when Rae walked to the front desk.

“When the newbie arrives, will you go ahead and send him on back?” Rae said.

Angel pulled her eyes away from the computer monitor. “Sure thing. Oh, and you mind if I skip out early after I get him checked in?”

“Don’t tell me you haven’t packed. You freaking leave tomorrow.”

Angel shot her an incredulous look. “Sis, I’ve been packed for a week. I just found another cute bikini I need to get.”

Rae smiled and rolled her eyes. “Fine. I can handle closing up.”

“And when I get back, maybe you and your eye candy can come out to the Copa again,” Angel said. “You know, so I can do a little more interrogation for ya.”

“In case you forgot, I’m not a masochist.”

“You loved it,” Angel teased. “I asked all the questions you’re too chickenshit to ask.”

“Like when you asked him if he’d let that go-go dancer blow him?”

Angel flashed a huge grin. “You know you kinda wanted to see it happen.”

“Oh, my God, hush.” They both chuckled, and Rae hugged Angel since she wouldn’t see her later. “Call me before you leave tomorrow morning, okay?”

“You got it.”

Rae went back to her dungeon room.

About fifteen minutes later, the new client entered the space, a cloud of horrible body spray following him inside. Troy was even larger in person, with muscles bulging all over his body. A roid head. Wouldn’t be her first, but it felt like a workout tying up hulking men like him, and her energy was waning.

Rae stood legs apart, arms crossed, her face calm and friendly with a dash of sternness. “Hello, Troy. Before we begin, do you have any questions or concerns outside of what we covered in your new client paperwork?”
