“What?”

“Forgive me for saying this, but are you that clueless?”

“Excuse me?” she huffed with indignation.

“There you are; I was just ensuring my brave girl was still in there. Don’t you know what we are by now?” I leaned in close to take her lips and kiss the bloody hell out of her. “I need to hear the words, Principessa. We don’t have to explain who or what we are because we already know, and that’s good enough for us.”

“You’re right, Bourne, we are an ‘us,’ and I feel stronger with you beside me. I will make a promise always to be brave and strong. No matter what happens, I’m here with you. I love you, Bourne.”

“I love you, and it will be okay; I will ensure it. Now, before this water cools, let’s enjoy it.” She kissed me, and then her arms wrapped around my neck, and I held her for long minutes until I made sweet love to her again. After several rounds of lovemaking, I knew she was exhausted. I put her to bed andkissed her. The past few hours have been a beautiful blur. I called Edric to meet me in my office to discuss the next phase of handling the Santoro Family. Of course, he wasn’t happy since it was the middle of the night, but other matters required my attention; I would always choose Sabina above anyone else.

“Are we honestly doing this?” he asked as he typed away on his laptop.

“Yup, we are, make the call,” With one last click on the keyboard and the invitation now sent for the face-to-face, we wait.

LUCAS

The call I’d been waiting for came through after nearly two weeks after my sister’s disappearance. I have been going out of my mind since my first and only call with Atwater. He has my sister and says it’s for her protection because my family threatens her. Fuck that! I would never hurt my baby sister, not in a million fucking years. He alluded to the fact that my father is responsible and taunted me that I may not know everything about my family as I believe I did. So, once our call ended, I had another conversation with my father, which led me to place him in the basement until I could get a better handle on all of this.

I was enraged when I returned from my trip and discovered Sabina missing. I questioned my father, but he played his role well as the concerned father. Marco pretended to be worried about Sabina’s safety. No matter how many lies he told, it would be a cold day in hell before I believed a word from his treacherous mouth. As soon as I received the email fromBourne Atwater, I accepted immediately and read the following response.

The video chat will commence at six p.m., Italy time. You will receive a five-minute alert notice, and then promptly; the chat window will open. It will be a secure connection, so don’t waste time tracking us.

“Fucking Edric!” I should have known. I poured myself a double scotch and tapped on my mother’s piano keys. “What don’t I know?” I said to no one else in the room. I was alone in my thoughts and surrounded by ghosts, namely my beloved mother. I closed the piano lid and walked over to the many shelves of books but noticed something missing—my mother’s music box. It was always here on this shelf, and now it’s missing. Where did it go?

Someone placed another in its place, but it wasn’t the piano replica. No, this was just a music box, but who would have done this? My father? Or Sabina?

“Gio!” I shouted until he burst through the door, along with a few guards who followed.

“Boss!? What’s wrong?”

“Everyone out!” I shouted to the guards, flanking Gio. He secured his gun and turned around to face me.

“I take it they’ve been in contact?”

“Yes, the call will take place tomorrow night at six, so I need to figure out what Bourne knows before we come face to face. Marco is on lockdown and will remain where he is until I can figure all this out.”

“Where do you want to start?”

“Let’s search my sister’s room and turn it the fuck upside down until we find anything leading to the reason why she ran.”

“There’s nothing here, boss, we’ve been searching for hours, and it’s clean.”

“You’ve checked the closets, dressers, everything, right?”

“All but the bathroom,” he said.

“Of course, the bathroom should have been the first place we checked.”

“I’m not following,”

“The bathroom is the one place my sister always ran to when she needed time to think or to fucking hide from everything that scared her. You don’t know how often I threatened to break down the door if she didn’t open it. Tear it apart until you find something.” Other than the usual things you would find in a bathroom, nothing was out of the ordinary to the human eyes, but the goal was to hide, not keep it out in the open.

I opened the cabinet and pulled out all the towels and baskets that were in there. I felt all the sides of the cabinet until my hand found a loose board on the bottom. I removed it and found a hidden cubby underneath the sink unit. “Gio, here it is, hand me a flashlight,” Once it was in my hand, I turned on the light to look around the small space and found nothing, but that did not mean something wasn’t there.
