“Lucas, why such anger? I am your father, and I would never hurt your sister. Although, I’ll admit I was caught off guard when I found her here.”

“Why? It’s our family library, and it’s never been off-limits to Sabina. My sister can come and go as much as she pleases, understood?”

“Yes, Lucas, of course. It saddens me because your mother always loved this room; her piano still sits in the corner.”

“Then that should tell you how important it is for Sabina to spend time in this room where she was closest to Mama. Do not scare her again if you don’t want me ripping out your fucking tongue. Don’t forget who is in charge here. You are only allowed to remain here in this house because I have granted it. However, that can change at any moment if you do not comply with the agreements we had in place long before Sabina returned home.”

I watched Lucas slam his way out of the library and then focused my attention on my father. He walked around the room and stopped right before my mother’s piano. It was open, just waiting for someone to play it, but no one ever did after her death. He slammed the lid closed and seethed in anger.

I was about to leave when I heard him say, “You may be in charge now, but not for long. Not for long, Lucas. Enjoy the throne while you still can.” His words sent chills down my spine, and then I closed the covering and sank to the floor.

I stayed there for a few minutes, and then I got up and ran down the long corridor to find another door. I felt around for a button or something that would open it, and when I couldn’t find anything, I slammed my hand against it, and suddenly it opened, revealing exactly where I was. I was back in the library but on the other side of a massive shelf of books. I went in a complete circle. How did I not remember this before? Secret passageways were hidden, right in the open? My body began to shake, and my legs felt too weak to stand as I leaned against my mother’s prized piano.

There was darkness in this room, but I couldn’t figure out why, and then I heard my mother’s voice almost calling out to me.“No, it’s your prison, and I am setting you free. I love you, Sabina, and no matter what happens, I will always be here with you. You must never take this off, for it will serve as your lifeline sometime in the future.”

I kept hearing her words in my mind, warning me. “Oh God, I need to remember,” I said as I paced the room again in front of the shelf on which the music box sat. Nothing stopped me this time as I grabbed it and held it close, protecting it from my father. I took it and ran from the library. I hid it under my sweater until I safely reached my bedroom door. Once inside, I closed and locked it. I examined the music box until my eyes blurred with exhaustion. I fell asleep holding the music box and dreamed of my mother, but it wasn’t peaceful this time.

I was in the hidden corridor again, watching my mother. She was holding something I couldn’t see, and then there were voices, and she quickly placed the object on the shelf between the books. It had to be her music box; it was the only thing shecared about besides the real one and her children. Then, a few seconds later, my father appeared with two men I’d never seen before. They looked frightening in their tall height and cold eyes. Both are in suits and armed to the teeth with guns at their sides.

“What did I tell you, Laurentina, about coming into this room?” he shouted as he stepped closer to my mother.

“I was going to play my piano,” she answered.

“You know the rules and now have disobeyed me. Tsk, tsk, tsk, we can’t have that, can we?”

“I’m sorry, Marco, you’re right. I’m only to play for you and the children.”

“The children are grown and don’t need to hear anything else from you, especially Sabina. You’ve been doing a lot of whispering to her lately; what about?” he demanded.

“She’s my daughter; we talk about many things.”

“About my business? Is that something dear sweet Sabina knows?”

“No, never. Sabina is innocent and pure. I would never taint our daughter with what you’ve done.”

“Oh, what have I done but only provide the best for my family? If that means getting my hands bloodied, so be it. I can live with it and sleep soundly in our bed. Is that still true for you, dear wife? Come to think of it; our bed has been cold without you. Maybe it’s time to rectify that.” He grabbed her by her arms and ripped open her blouse, exposing her to his men. One bit his lip, and the other wiped his mouth, looking hungry. I felt sick and wanted to throw up. I had to scream for help, but no words came out when I did. I was just as trapped as my mother.

“You are so beautiful, Laurentina, just like Sabina. She will make a good and obedient toy to my protégé here.” He signaled for the one man to come closer to my mother. Once he did, myfather said, “Do you like what you see? My daughter is even more beautiful, and as my wife said, she’s pure and untouched. She will be perfect for you, Andreas.”

“No! My mother screamed, but then my father covered her mouth, forcing her down to the floor.

“Shut the fuck up, or I will slit your throat and make Sabina watch.” She stopped struggling, and then he motioned Andreas to come closer. He hovered over my mother’s body; his eyes met my father’s, and I knew what would happen next. He slowly and sinisterly unbuckled his belt and dropped his pants and underwear before falling to his knees. My father gripped my mother’s face and squeezed hard. “You’ve been no wife to me, so you will be a whore for Andreas. You will not make a sound or move one inch as he fucks you in all the ways you deserve. You will be silent as you take your punishment. Do you understand me, Laurentina? It’s either you or Sabina.” He spat out, then released my mother’s face and gestured with his hand for the man to continue. I covered my mouth, fearing I would be sick, as I watched and listened in paralyzed fear.

She looked so scared but didn’t fight back. Then, Andreas lifted her skirt and ripped and tugged down her underwear. What came next was horrifying as I witnessed Andrea’s cruelty, as he raped my mother, brutalizing her poor body with every hard thrust he lunged forward. She whimpered a slight sound, and then my father slapped her repeatedly until she stopped. The man shouted a strange sound and then collapsed on top of her. My father stepped closer, and the man was gone.

“Have you learned your lesson yet, Laurentina? You will not disobey me again because if you do, I will kill you, and you will never see Lucas or Sabina again. You will learn your place and keep your mouth shut. Lucas is my future, and I will not lose him to the imaginary hopes and dreams you try to fill his head with.”

“Sabina,” she cried out my name.

“Yes, the lamb that survived the slaughter. You don’t have to worry about Sabina; Andreas will keep her in line.” She curled into a ball, and the man who hurt my mother laughed over her broken body. I was alone with no one to help me. Lucas was not here, and most of the men were gone too. It was just my father and these two men.

“Go to Sabina; her bedroom is at the top of the stairs to the right.” My father instructed, and then my mother screamed a blood-curdling cry and reached for the solid steel letter opener on the desk. She rushed toward the man and plunged the opener into his neck like a dagger.

He tried to charge at her, but she stabbed him again until he collapsed onto the same spot he had raped her just a few moments before.

“You stupid bitch!” my father shouted at my mother.

“Fuck you, Marco! You can destroy me as many times as you believe you can, but you will never touch our daughter. She went to lunge toward my father, still holding the letter opener, when my father pulled out his gun and shot her right between her eyes. My mother’s lifeless body fell to the floor in a pool of blood.
