She could hear the sounds of one of Camryn Quick’s biggest singles pulsing through the building, but Nova didn’t feel like going back to the crush of people, and she didn’t feel like she’d rather be anywhere else.

“I won’t be missing anything if I’m with you, Daddy. Except maybe one thing.”

“What’s that?”

“Is that ring still on offer?”

Nova had never been to Alaska, and she’d never experienced dark winter. But she had to imagine the look on Linc’s face was the same as when the sun finally came out after hiding for months. Thrilled was the only word for it.

“You mean it, Nova?”

“I’m not nice, either,” she teased.

Hastily, Linc took the box out of his pocket again and this time took the ring out from its velvet bed to slip on her finger. It was perfect and unexpected like the man who was sliding it on her finger. Once it was snug on her ring finger, Linc grinned at her.

“I love you, shortcake. I have for half my life and I can’t think of a better way to start the new year than with you agreeing to be my wife.”

“I love you too, Daddy,” she told him, no longer sniffling but her eyes still brimming with happy tears. “Best New Year’s ever.”

THE END
