I’m doomed. That’s the only thing I know as she deepens the kiss and pushes me downwards so I’m sitting on the workbench. She brings a leg over my lap, straddling me and rocking her hips. I growl against her mouth, then suck on her bottom lip before trailing my lips down her neck and to the curve of her breasts.

She sighs and leans into my touch.

How have I gone so long without doing this again?

Gravel stirs as someone walks along the side of the house and Piper springs from my lap. While she straightens her clothes and fixes her hair where my fingers dove, I lean over the workbench and put the buds back in my ear. I’m tapping my foot against the chair in rhythm to a song that’s not even playing as John makes his way over to the two of us.

Piper straightens and gives him one of her genuine smiles and I can’t stop myself from staring intently at it. If there’s a curve I love most on her, it's when her lips tip into a bright smile like this. John nods, his mouth moving as the two of them talk, then he looks over to me and waves a hand in front of my face.

As I pull the buds out of my ear once again, I can only hope that he didn’t catch wind of anything going on with Piper and I. Maybe I should figure out this best friend situation before it’s too late and things go south — now’s not the time though. Not with Piper standing right here looking guilty as hell.

Chapter Eleven

Piper

Iwokeupthismorning with determination. I’m sick of hiding these feelings I have for Beau and it’s about time I let them out in the open. When I get out of the shower, I go for the light blue sundress that’s hanging up in my closet, one that I rarely wear, and pair it with a pair of white strappy sandals.

You’re trying too hard, Piper.I shake the negative thoughts away and pull my hair into a tight ponytail, then dab some gloss onto my lips. The saw echoing through my open window has me jumping slightly and I chuckle at myself, then square my shoulders and make my way out of the room.

When I open the back door Beau’s bare back is facing me and I take a few minutes to appreciate the lines of his muscles straining as he saws through a slab of wood. His jaw is clenched, focusing on the task at hand, not even glancing up at his surroundings.

I take a deep breath and start down the steps, then move across the grass until I get in front of him. I’m thrown off when he doesn’t glance up at me, but I try to let the small rejection fall off my shoulders. “Think you could take a break for a minute?” When he still doesn’t give me his attention, I travel my gaze along the cord falling from the saw until I get to where it’s plugged in.

No need to get hasty just yet, Piper. Try again, he probably can’t hear you.

“Hey!” I say over the noise. “Turn that thing off for a minute!”

When I still get no sign of him answering me, I march over to the plug and pull the cord out, smiling when the noise ceases to exist. He curses under his breath, then spins around to face me, his eyes traveling the length of my body. I clench my thighs together under his stare and inch closer to him, catching the heavy breaths he takes with each step.

“What are you doing, Piper?” He asks, his voice strangled.

Good, I’m having an effect on him. I smirk as I continue cutting the distance between us and can’t help but chuckle when he tries to take a step back, only to bump into the work bench behind him.

“Here’s the thing, Beau,” I say softly, then bring my finger to his bare chest when I get close enough to him. “I’m really tired of playing this game.”

His throat bobs as he swallows thickly, then he takes a deep breath. “What game?” The way his voice strains with the words only has the smirk growing on my face.

“I think you know exactly what I’m talking about.” I trail my finger down his abdomen until I reach the waistline of his pants, then hook my finger through it. His breath hitches at the contact and I do the craziest thing, sticking my tongue out and swiping it along his sweat coated skin.

I’m not sure what’s so hot about the sweat covering his body, but I couldn’t help myself. My eyes close slowly, but they snap back open when he gently pushes me away from him.

Beau shakes his head and closes his eyes. “We can’t, Piper.”

I cross my arms over my chest and glare at him, suddenly feeling naked under his stare but not wanting to back down from this. I’m not one to give up a fight and definitely not this one. “Why not?”

He sighs and runs a hand through his hair, making me wish I was the one doing it instead. “Your father. I can’t do this to him.”

I shrug. “That’s easy. We can keep it from him until we’re ready.”

“Piper, I’m not starting something with you just because you’re lonely,” he spits out. “Your dad’s my best friend. I can’t do that to him.” His expression softens when I rear back at his words like he just slapped me in the face, then he reaches a hand out to touch me but I step back. “Piper, I didn’t mean that.”

“You know,” I say with a chuckle. “I put this pretty dress on to get your attention and I was going to tell you that I have feelings for you.Realfeelings. What I didn’t come out here for was to be insulted and judged by you.”

“Piper, wait,” he says, his voice wavering.

“I’m just going back inside to change, then head to work. Have a good day.” Before I can say anything else, I rush up the back steps and let the door slam shut behind me. Something crashes outside, but I can’t bring myself to turn around or else I’ll run back out there and see if he’s okay.

When I get up to my room, tears are hot against my cheeks and I swipe them away aggressively. I’m just getting my dress up over my head when the door to my room pushes open and I look up to find Beau standing in the doorway. My dress drops to the floor and his eyes track the movement before coming back to my gaze.
