I nod and give her a small smile. “As long as you’re sure.”

“I am,” she says, before leaning against the leather seat and casting her gaze out the window.

There’s a long line of cars waiting to park when we pull onto the back road leading to the parking lot, so it takes about ten minutes before we are being routed into our spot. When I steal a glance over at Piper there’s a big smile on her face as she looks at all the rides set up inside, then she hops out of the truck excitedly.

I chuckle, then hop out with her. “Hey,” I call out and she stops her trek up the dirt path. “Do you mind waiting for me?”

She turns with an apologetic grin. “Sorry, I’m too excited.”

It’s cute, seeing her this way. I remember coming with her and John once when she was a little girl, but there’s something even more special about it right now. This moment is just for us, and it’s one that I’ll cherish for a long while. Maybe forever. The thought sounds crazy, but not crazy enough for me not to have it.

When I reach her, she grabs hold of my hand and drags me over to the ticket booth where we get matching orange bracelets. She grabs her phone from her pocket and brings it up in the air, capturing a picture of us before making a beeline for one of the food trucks.

“God, I forgot how good the food smelled here. I need something to eat,” she says while heading toward a corn dog stand.

I purchase two of them, then walk us over to an empty bench and sit down. As soon as she takes a bite, she moans and her eyes roll into the back of her. My dick immediately stands at attention, but I try my best to get it to calm down. This is not the time or place to be getting a hard-on.

She wipes her mouth before standing up and throwing her garbage away, then halts when she catches my stare on her. “What?”

I shake my head and smile. “Nothing, just don't peg you for someone who uses their mouth as a vacuum for their food.”

Her mouth falls open and she smiles, punching my shoulder lightly. “Rude.” Then she leans back and lets out a long sigh. “I have to admit, I’ve never felt better than I do today. So, thank you.”

“For what?”

She shrugs. “If you hadn’t made me eat last night, I’m not so sure I would've been up for this.”

Just knowing how horrible she’s been feeling makes me want to go right back to that office and say more, but this day isn’t at an end so I stay firmly in place on the bench. I stand with my own garbage, then hold my hand out to her with a smile. “It wouldn’t be a day at the fair if you didn’t walk out with something, would it?”

“True,” she says with a wink, then follows me over to the section where they have the games.

There’s a group of kids sitting at the gun games — the ones where you have to shoot water at a target and get the ball to the top of the pole — and I take a seat beside them. They eye me warily, then a few of them tap out and head back over to be with their parents.

The attendant walks over and takes the cash from me, then starts the game back up. It only takes a few seconds before the light is shining above my section and the kids beside me groan. When I look over at Piper, she’s got her eyes on the kids and soft expression on her face.

I’m surprised when she leans over and taps one of the kids on the shoulder, then points up to the prize options. “Why don’t you pick one, huh?”

The little boy grins from ear to ear, then points excitedly at the large stuffed duck hanging up, and I nod at the attendant to grab it. He thanks Piper for it before rushing over to his own parents with a bright smile.

Piper nudges her head toward the Ferris Wheel ahead of us and smiles. “That’s good enough for me,” she says before leading us into the line for the ride. When we get into the car, she sighs and looks out at the people around us. “This has always been my favorite ride.”

“Why’s that?”

She smiles as the ride starts ascending, carrying us to the very top. “You can see everything from all the way up there, it’s nice to see how happy this place makes everyone else too, you know?” When it stops at the top, she adds, “It’s so beautiful.”

I’m not looking at the view though, I’m only looking at her when I say, “It is.”

When her gaze clashes with mine, I do the only thing I can think of and bring my lips to hers in a tender kiss. This isn’t like all the others we’ve shared recently. It’s slow, sensual, nothing but care and love being poured into it. Neither of us are deepening it either, just letting it go at its own pace.

Her cheeks are flushed when she finally pulls away and the car descends back down to the bottom. A few people lock their gazes onto her, but no one says anything as we make our way off the platform and back onto the gravel path.

This is going to be a day I’ll always remember.

Chapter Fifteen

Piper

Unfortunately, theweekendhadto come to an end and I’m wishing it could’ve lasted forever. The fair was just the thing I needed after the stress I’ve been going through with work, and after eating so much I’m feeling a lot more alive than I have in months. Maybe even years, if I’m being honest.
