Emric put up a small sound barrier around us. I knew what that meant. He wanted me to tell him what had happened down there. I told him as much of the details as succinctly as possible.

Malachi walked over to us, apparently done speaking with the other shifters, and sniffed at the dark red barrier.

Emric let it fall immediately. “It was a sound barrier. So Keir could tell me what happened without worrying about who was eavesdropping. We do them often in Wylan. Had to out of necessity because the dead king had too many damn spies.”

Can it work with me in it?Malachi asked curiously.

Emric flicked a finger, and the red barrier was back, but extended to include him as well.

This. This is extraordinarily clever.Malachi snorted and bobbed his head.

“I have no idea how it works with your telepathy though,” I offered.

A few of the Enchanted were looking over at us, varying levels of concern on their faces.

“I didn’t say anything other than what I mentioned to you about the iron netting,” I told Malachi.

Malachi turned his head in the direction of the queen. She must have noticed he was in a red barrier of magic.

Emric let the barrier fall. “Apologies. Still likely too many eyes watching now for me to have tried that.”

It was fun all the same. I have ideas. Lots of ideas. Like could you send air to Esta and then she could use her firepower to light everything on fire? Could be fun.

Until today, I hadn’t really thought of how Wylan’s magic and Dra Skor’s could work together. But down in that water, it had taken both to save Kian’s life.

Amory returned, handing me some bread.

“Thank you,” I said with a nod.

Just as I finished, the queen stomped our way. Now that she was not crammed into the library, the sunlight reflecting off her scales every so often showing that purple hue, I was in awe of her sheer size. She seemed even more massive, more dangerous.

For the first time, I wished my father was still alive, if only to watch him piss himself when he saw her.

You still don’t have a shirt on,the queen noted.

I had to squint into the sun to look into one of her eyes, but I smiled as I argued, “I look better without one.”

Malachi snorted his approval. We can grab his clothes on the way out. We left them on the cliffs in our haste.

Neither Amory nor the queen said anything, but the queen still seemed to be looking at my chest, so I added, “I will take your lack of a comment as your agreement, possibly even adoration.”

Amory laughed.

Insufferable prince. The queen did her eye roll thing, which I was starting to love. It was a reminder that there was still a woman in there somewhere. Likely as powerful and fierce as her dragon form.

She added,This was a scary day. Thank you, Prince Keiran. Without your efforts, without even the air you managed to get to Kian, we would have lost him today.

I gave her a nod and explained my entire motivations for it, “It was simply the right thing to do.”

We have much left to do after what happened here today, but let’s go home, the queen commanded.

She grabbed Amory in one palm, me in the other.

“Are you sure those talons of yours aren’t feeling stabby?” I asked.

She was quiet a moment before responding. They absolutely are, but not toward you.
