Iwoke up to sunlight streaming in the windows. The smell was what had brought me around. Food. By the smell of it, amazing food.

Miles had his feet propped up on a couch in the sitting area. “Morning. Or should I say almost afternoon.”

I inhaled deeply. I had slept for almost an entire day. It had been a deep sleep also. Possibly my only sleep since arriving in Dra Skor in which I didn’t think they might try to murder us.

“Morning,” I offered back. “They delivered all this food, and you let it be? That’s some serious restraint, Miles.”

He grinned. “I know. The queen apparently ordered it for you and had Amory deliver it herself. They said they didn’t want you to think it had been poisoned.”

I smirked. “How ironic.” Then I stilled. “Wait, where are the water samples?” They were no longer sitting on the table in front of the couch.

Miles held up a hand. “Not to worry. John took them to his room to continue work on them while you slept off burnout.”

I gave my neck a roll and tried my magic. It immediately flared in my palms. It looked like my magic was well on its way to recouping already.

I was starved though. I had fallen asleep on the ride back to the castle in the queen’s talons. How I had gotten from her grips to my bed I couldn’t even remember.

I walked toward the food. There were multiple silver covers on the food. I moved them to see sausages, eggs, bacon, toast, hashbrowns, and flat cakes. There was enough food to likely feed all ten of us, not just me.

“Wow,” I offered.

Miles reached over and stole a sausage, taking a bite.

After I ate, I got dressed and headed right away to speak to John before I was sure to be due in the library with Amory and the queen. I was anxious to get to the library today. To hear who was suspected with the iron netting and capture of Kian. If they had any leads or not yet.

“My Prince. Miles,” John greeted us both.

“Good afternoon,” I offered.

John was grinning as he sent a concentrated thick stream of his green magic into a water vial. “Who would have thought that our Dra Skor fire to put out would fall so perfectly into our hands. Well done yesterday, Keir. Well done.”

I let out a sigh. I was so tired of everyone thinking that I had saved Kian because I was trying to manipulate anyone. In the moment, I had simply wanted to help. To not let an evil force at work take a life.

“That wasn’t why I did it,” I offered.

John must have heard the frustration on my tone. He stopped his work with the vials and stood. “Of that, I have no doubt, Your Grace. I meant no offense.”

“In this case, I hadn’t even been thinking about the fire we should put out to get into their good graces,” I explained. “I am not my father and do not do nice things for people only because I need to use them for some underlying purpose.”

John’s eyes were on mine as he said, “Any of us who know you know that, Keir. It will still help with the tensions between the countries though. Whether you thought of that in the moment or not.”

I gave him a nod. I was sick of everything having multiple meanings. Every move having a list of pros and cons attached to it. Could I not save a person’s life just because it was the right thing to do?

“I am heading to the library soon,” I offered. “Can you and Emric both accompany me today?”

John gave me a nod. “Wilks, you and Archer are on vial duty.”

“Then who is going to protect you?” The guard fired back, as he normally shadowed John.

“Only the best,” Miles offered with a cocky grin.

“Shall we?” I said on a sigh. “Let’s go see who committed treason against Dra Skor.” I cocked my head to the side. “It thankfully wasn’t us this time.”

The library wasa sober place after all that had gone on the day before. The queen was missing, doing some investigating of her own about the events that had transpired.

“Amory, I fear we are going to need Jorah’s help with the vials.” I let out a long sigh. “Yet with everything going on, particularly given yesterday, I do not want her here.”
