Amory considered my words from where we stood over the Dra Skor map again. “I understand that. Let me speak with Esta. Maybe there is a way we could sneak her in and back out. A very quick trip.”

I considered that. “That might work. But getting my brother dearest convinced to allow her to come will be the hard part. He doesn’t tend to want her far from him.”

“They are soul bound? That rumor is true also?” she offered.

I smiled. “Yes.”

Amory waited a few moments as she watched me, clearly having something more to say. I gestured for her to just ask it.

“She was first in your Assemblage?”

I snorted. “Yes. Before I botched things up. Which I tend to do.”

“Not all the time,” she argued, and I knew she meant yesterday.

I gestured with my hand. “Regardless, she is where she should be.”

“And you?” Amory asked.

I gave my head a shake. “What about me? I thought we were trying to plan a covert trip for my queen?”

“We can get back to that later. I must talk to Esta first anyway and she is busy today. But are you pining for anyone back in Wylan?” she clarified. “And yes, I was just being intrusive.”

I dipped my chin. “Why? Are you interested, Amory?”

Emric snorted while John paid us no attention, his nose in a book, of course.

She rolled her eyes, quite like her queen, before flicking them to the skies. “Goodness no. I was merely curious.” She paused. “We have celebrations often in Dra Skor, parties of sorts. After battles, when someone dies, when people are bonded, things like that. We are thinking of throwing one for Kian. As the person who saved him, you would be the guest of honor.”

John’s eyes lit up as he lifted them to me. He must have been listening after all. I knew what he was thinking. It would be a great way to mingle with the Dra Skor people. A great way to get them to see us as people who would help and not harm.

Amory wrinkled her nose. “As a foreign presence here, also that you’re...that.”She gestured to my body. “It seems likely you will be given many attentions that night. I thought you might want to know.”

I gave my head a shake. “I do not need attentions. Nor am I in the market for a wife. I am here to get your Enchantment back, though a few friends in the process would be nice.” I gestured to my body the same way she had. “Particularly ones who regard me highly.”

“So we are friends then?” Amory jested. “Just like that?”

“You did hug us,” Emric reminded her.

“It was a moment of weakness,” Amory argued. “But fine. Friends.” She looked to her watch. “Now if you will excuse me. Esta is due back any moment and we have a meeting in the war room with the advisors.”

She had told us right away there was no news of who was responsible for yesterday, only whispers. Initially, many of the Enchanted in their human forms had believed we were responsible, until the word from the shifters squashed those rumors. Add that the Wylan ship had been meeting another of our ships halfway to deliver a letter of mine for Krew, and that only furthered our innocence.

“Well tell your queen if she would like her gem of the day, she knows where to find me.” I smirked.

Amory grinned. “She might need that today. Something to brighten a dark day.”

The water vialswere pissing me off. There was no other way to describe it. The amount of magic we had thrown at that water was unheard of. Anything else would have been pulverized into dust by now.

Yet the water remained black.

I wondered if that was how Jorah felt waiting for the lake to turn, day after day going to pour more magic into it. Yet her magic had a healing entity. So maybe I was doing all of this work for nothing. But dammit, I didn’t want to bring Jorah here under these conditions either. Our new queen couldn’t just waltz into the land of our sworn enemies. At the very least, I needed to stand in the lakes and try.

I heard the clunk of something heavy on my balcony. I turned to find the queen and Amory.

“We have company,” Dex offered flatly. “It just doesn’t ever get old seeing a dragon in real life, does it?”
