With a shrug, he loaded onto Malachi. He was trying to downplay it, but I knew for a fact Owen was excited.

The queen took the other three guards in her talons, Amory and I riding on her back.

“I like them,” Amory stated.

“They’re something,” I said but couldn’t fight my grin.

As soon as we were airborne for Halikaara Keep and properly spaced, I glanced at Jorah and Owen to find them looking like they were having the time of their lives. I placed my hand on the queen’s wing next to me and patted it.

Yes?

It was here I realized it would have been much better if I could speak telepathically back to her. “You’re quiet, Esta.”

Merely observing, she responded after a moment.

“Did you get enough sleep?” I asked, quiet enough that I knew she could still hear it, but the others flying with us wouldn’t. We had hardly spoken since her power nap on my balcony.

I did. I will be ready for the morning mission.

“That wasn’t why I was asking,” I said on a sigh.

Amory turned and sent me the barest of smiles. I suspected she knew the queen fell asleep on my balcony. She was also the only one close enough to hear what I was saying to the queen.

I gave her a shrug.

It was that moment Owen gave out a whoop as Malachi decided to roll sideways into a dive before pulling back up next to us.

Owen was holding Malachi’s mane and had the biggest grin.

“Showoff,” I called.

“Does it ever wear off?” he asked as Malachi moved back in. “The joy of seeing what the shifters can do? And seeing creatures you thought only existed in fiction?”

“No,” I answered honestly.

Wanna race?Whit asked us all.

“Oh hell to the yes we do,” Owen said immediately. “We’ve got this.”

The queen let out a snort.

“Prepare to lose.” I found myself grinning again. They were all about to sorely lose this race.

“On the queen’s mark,” Amory stated.

I instinctively squeezed with my legs though I knew it was useless.

“You’re just going to have to hold on to me,” Amory said quickly.

I knew she was right.

“Don’t make it awkward,” she warned.

“It wouldn’t be if people would stop mentioning that it is, in fact, awkward,” I snapped.

She laughed.

“Give them hell, Esta,” I added while I wrapped my arm respectfully as possible around Amory.
