And with a quiet roar, we were off.

“We were so close though,”Owen said defensively as they landed on my balcony.

“Whit was a gentleman. I feel if I was not on his back, he would have likely won,” Jorah offered up loyally with a pat to Whit.

They were both delusional. Esta would win that race time and time again.

We said our goodbyes to Whit and Malachi for now and they took off back to the skies.

“That was wonderful,” Jorah said to the queen with a slight bow. “Truly. Thank you. Though maybe not as much thanks for winning, because now I will hear about it from Keir until the end of time.”

The queen said something back, but I could tell she was pleased.

Emric threw open the balcony door. “Get your ass—” he paused, eyes going to the queen and Amory, “I meanbiscuitsin here!”

Not the biscuits again, the queen sent me.

“I find him entirely annoying but also a little endearing,” Amory admitted to no one in particular.

I laughed as the guards, Owen, and Jorah all went into my room to greet the rest of our group.

I spun to Esta. “You want to tell me why you were so quiet now? You only slept over. Didn’t even have to do a full fly of shame.”

Amory choked on a laugh and Esta pinned her with a glare.

“She already knew,” I offered. “I haven’t broken my promise. So back to why you were so quiet today... .”

The queen let out a sigh.I was suspicious when you first came here that your brother and your queen sent you on this mission into the heart of your enemies in order to get rid of you. Permanently. To secure their reign.

So she’d been worried about me? “I wouldn’t have given the throne over to anyone who imitated my father in any way.”

I know that now. I just didn’t expect to like them. Even the guards were respectful and kind.

I felt the corner of my mouth tug upward. “Yeah, well you’re not so bad yourself.”

She spun to grab Amory, smacking me with a wing as she went.

“We will send refreshments soon, and I’ll deliver them personally,” Amory reminded me.

“Thank you both. For making this possible.” To Esta I added, “And for having my back.”

She was already airborne into the sunset when she sent me,We make our own rules.

CHAPTER20

It was way too early, yet I wasn’t all that upset about having to wake up at this ungodly hour because the couch in my room definitely hadn’t been designed for someone of my height.

Owen woke Jorah while I used the lavatory and readied myself for the day. The rest of yesterday had been pleasant, with one small problem. Krew wasn’t here. Nor Warrick. So though it felt great to have Owen and Jorah here, there were still missing and valuable pieces whose absence couldn’t go ignored. A gaping hole in my family being here.

Determination stirred in my veins. Today would go well. It had to. I wasn’t even going to go down the jankety ass road of what would happen if we couldn’t help Dra Skor. Warrick would likely see war either under his father’s reign or his own, that was certain.

Owen gave me a look as I came back into the room. “All this time and we are still cleaning up Theon’s messes.”

“Prick,” Jorah muttered.

Within twenty minutes, we were loading onto the queen, Whit, and Malachi, all of us more reserved than the day before. It was time to go to work. And the nerves of not knowing how it would all turn out were eating at me.
