“Esta,” I said as I put a free hand on one of her claws wrapping around my waist.

Keir,she responded.

“Take us to The Drak. I want to try something.”

She shook her head above me and let out a puff of smoke I saw. Why?

“Just humor me,” I offered. “I used a fraction of as much magic as I thought I would need, and I want to try something.”

Fine.

The queen thankedthe winged lion named Zaccai for delivering John to The Drak before he took back to the skies.

I headed for the lake, Emric, John, and Amory walking along with me.

What are we doing?Esta asked me.

I spun back toward her and walked backward two steps. “I want to send my magic at you while you stand in the lake.”

I turned back around, and she still hadn’t said a thing, but followed along behind us.

John, of course, was too curious not to ask questions. “But why here? You think it will help having her stand in the water because the sanctuary itself holds a magic related to her magic?”

I gave him a nod. “I assume just like we needed to revive the connection between the lake and the shifters, we need to also restore the shifters themselves.” I wasn’t sure how my father had done this to Dra Skor, but I was working off the hunch that the shifters themselves were poisoned, something had blocked their ability to shift back, and we needed to fix that.

“That is not a bad idea,” Emric stated.

“And I’d rather try it here with fewer people than start giving anyone hope or promises of any kind,” I added.

“Thank you for that,” Amory said. “Though the lakes themselves changing are reason enough for some to believe that you will accomplish both, changing our lakes back and ourselves.”

“I noticed I went from rarely being bowed to, to being anambassadorand bowed to and treated kindly by most people,” I commented as my boots hit the water. “Almost as if overnight.”

Amory gave her head a shake. “Not quite. I think it was saving Kian that started it.”

“Your Grace,” I offered gently, seeing the queen hesitate, “I promise I will not hurt you. I can make my magic inflict a breeze or throw you or make you feel as if you are on fire. I am going to be sending magic at you, but not willing it to do any of those things.”

It is not the magic I am nervous for,she sent me.

I gestured for Emric and John to give us a bit of space, not knowing what her issue was. I put up a sound barrier around just the two of us.

“Only you and me can hear. What is it, Es?”

Nothing. You can begin.

“Can I show you something first?”

She dipped her giant head into a nod.

I sent a small trail of magic along one of her legs and racing up her back. I had willed heat into it, and she shivered slightly as it hit her scales. “That is what you have felt before, but what I am about to do will feel more like this.”

I sent another, this one winding around her, willing it to simply move around her. “I don’t have a healing element to my magic like Jorah does, so her next trip back we might need to repeat this, but while my magic is somewhat recouped, I’d still like to try it myself.”

Let’s just get it over with then, shall we?

I wasn’t sure why she was so against this now when every other time she had been excited by my magic, telling me she could barely feel anything through her scales. Maybe she just wanted to get back to the castle because of The Taaka lake and everything going on in the aftermath of its changing. I let my sound barrier fall.
