Chapter 48 - Cara

Cara had to change her approach. Words weren’t enough.

It had been hours of failing and trying and failing again. By now, nobody wanted to talk to her at all - they were all worried she’d try to drag them into her campaign to engage in Samuel’s war.

Every minute that passed, Quinn and Julia were still in danger.

She had to prove it, somehow. Prove to them that Nick wasn’t the enemy. Convince them that the war had already started. They needed to act now, before it was too late. If the elders did nothing, her friends would be the first of many people caught in the middle of the war.

She needed proof, but she didn’t know what she could do.

She stayed because they couldn’t fight Samuel with the coven. Now, she realised it was a mistake. She was getting her friends back, one way or another. Even if it meant walking into the vampire den alone. This time, she was ready. She had to be. Her friends needed her.

First, she needed her freedom. She was a witch, Nick was a void, Henry was a former witch hunter, and Brett was a daywalker. Between the four of them, they might stand a chance.

Cara slipped through the house, nodding to a few people who caught her eye, and she subtly aimed for the front door.

“Cara?”

She slowed, but didn’t stop.

“Cara, where are you going?”

Someone stepped into her path, and she looked up at her father.

“Dad, hi. What’s up?”

The voice behind her caught up with them. “Didn’t you hear me calling for you?” It was Lila, a witch from the coven who was friends with her mother.

“She heard you,” her father said, his eyes narrowed.

She looked at Lila. “Of course, I didn’t. I would’ve come over to you.”

Lila frowned, glancing at Eric for a moment. “I was just concerned. You looked a bit upset, and you weren’t talking to anyone for the first time in hours. Are you alright?”

“I’m fine,” she said. She glanced at her father again, and she could see it in his eyes - he knew exactly what she was doing.

She gave him an innocent smile, and then she turned and bolted past Lila.

“Stop her!” he shouted.

The witches were slow to understand, and she broke through the crowd into the kitchen. There were only a few people in here. Voices broke out in the rest of the house, and Cara slammed the kitchen door behind her and pushed her back against it.

She muttered a spell, pressing her hand flat against the door, and there was a ripple of energy that spread across the surface. She sagged as the magic ripped a chunk of strength from her body.

It wouldn’t hold long.

She looked at the other witches again, and she finally saw him.

Jay was staring at her, holding a salad bowl with his mouth open, frozen right before he took a bite.

“Cara?”

“Block the doors,” her father yelled from the hallway.

The other two witches moved in front of the side door leading out to the garden, and Cara felt someone kicking the hallway door behind her.

She rushed across the room, right past Jay, and she let magic flow through her as she rushed to the window. She made a fist and flames spread around it. She threw her other arm over her face and punched, smashing through the glass.
