“We don’t have time,” Nick said.

Cara put her hand on Nick’s arm. “Jay, we both know what they’ll say. The greater good, and all that. Nick and Brett won’t get any help from them. Even if they decide to act, it will take too long. Samuel gave him exactly one day.”

“But we can’t let the vampires have avoid,” Jay repeated, emphasising the word as if it was going to make her understand.

“I’m going,” Nick said. “You can argue for as long as you want, but I can’t wait around. Cara, stay here. They want me alive. You don’t have that protection.”

“We already discussed this,” Cara said. “I’m coming. But we’re not leaving right now. It’ll be dark soon, and they’re strongest at night.”

Nick frowned, but he nodded.

“And I don’t think you have any guarantee of safety from them. They could kill you, too. You’ve already been seen with witches, Nick. They might think you’re our ally.”

“Samuel doesn’t think that.”

“Are you sure? A dead void isn’t a threat to them. This entire thing could be a trap.”

“Even if it is, I still have to go,” Nick said. “He’s my brother.”

“But not now,” she said. “It’ll be night soon. He gave you one day. We should go in the morning, as soon as the sun comes up.”

Nick was clearly wrestling with his urge to rush to his brother. “Fine. What do we do now?”

“I have an idea. Maybe a plan, if we’re lucky.”

Chapter 16 - Cara

Cara had heard stories of ancient vampires. They were immortals, centuries old, and most of them liked power and wealth and luxury.

“They’d be too conceited to keep human prisoners in their own home,” she said. “What if Brett is being kept somewhere else? Samuel probably wouldn’t want prison cells right beside his dining room.”

“Maybe,” Nick said.

“Imagine him living in a huge mansion or a penthouse apartment. Do you really think he’s going to keep prisoners, especially human ones, nearby? Unless they’re being used for blood, but Brett isn’t. He’s a hostage, not a blood bank. Samuel will probably keep Brett somewhere else.”

“You’re saying ‘probably’ a lot.”

“Nick, if I’m right, Brett’s being kept somewhere else. We can sneak in, break him out, and no one will notice until we’re long gone.”

“If you’re right,” Nick said, “it’s a good plan.”

“Sorry to be the bearer of bad news,” Jay interrupted. “But if he’s hidden away somewhere random, how are you going to find him?”

“Locator spell,” Cara said. “We’ll find out where he is and whether or not he’s with Samuel.”

“But he’s...” Jay frowned. “Will it work on him? His brother’s a void.”

“So?” Nick said. “Brett’s not a void.”

“It’s in his blood,” Jay said. “It might not work.”

Cara led the way into the dining room. Her mother’s maps and tracking tools were still on the table. Everything she needed to locate a kidnapped human.

“Voids are rare,” she said. “I don’t know enough to say for sure, but I doubt it appears in every member of a family. Otherwise, they would’ve been wiped out centuries ago, because the bloodlines with void potential would have been obvious.” She glanced at Nick. “No offence, but you know what I mean. It makes more sense that it only presents itself in some members of the family.”

“Don’t worry about it,” Nick said. “I’m starting to get used to the idea that everyone hates voids.”
