“Hey, guys,” Henry said. The door was open, and he smiled at them, but it faded quickly. “I heard your voices. Can we talk?”

“Sure,” Nick said, and Brett nodded.

Henry walked in and pulled out the chair from Brett’s desk. The desk was messy and littered with random clothes and possessions, but by some miracle, the chair was clear.

“Sorry for interrupting, but I’ve been waiting for the right moment to get you both together. We need to talk.”

Chapter 36 - Cara

“The elders have made a decision.”

Cara looked up from her phone. “Really?”

“You’re staying here until further notice.”

“What? What about Samuel? Nick? The vampires?”

Her father shook his head. “No news, yet. The elders are still deliberating.”

Cara stared at him. “So, what, the only decision they made was to keep me here? I’m already here.”

“And you’ll stay here.”

“That’s not even a decision, it’s-”

“The elders’ word is final.”

She opened her mouth to argue, but he was already walking away.

Cara couldn’t believe it, and it was the final push she needed. She had been considering it for days.

It was time to leave. It wouldn’t be easy, but after the first day or two, her parents weren’t watching her as closely. They relaxed, thinking she’d accepted their decision. The truth was that she was waiting to see what the coven would do, but now, it was obvious that it was pointless.

Cara went into her bedroom, making sure that her dad noticed, and then she silently slipped back downstairs. She heard his footsteps, and she moved behind the door, watching him go into the next room.

She waited for him to sit down, and then she went to the side door in the kitchen and carefully eased it open. The garden was quiet and empty, but she felt exposed as she ran across the grass to the wall. She pulled herself up, gritting her teeth against the effort, and then hopped down the other side.

The line of wards ran parallel to the wall, just a few feet away.

Cara edged closer to it. If she accidentally triggered the wards, the coven would find out immediately, and it wouldn’t take her parents more than a minute to find her.

She crouched down and spread her fingers. She felt the currents of magic in the air against her skin, and she gently coaxed it into revealing the invisible runes on the ground.

The elders had created these wards, but the original spell was her mother’s work. Invisible runes, powerful protection against supernatural creatures, counterspells to protect against meddling from other witches. It was a complex spell, and it showed her mother’s skill.

Of course, the elders had to add to it. Instead of only protecting against the outside world, the wards now directed their magic to people going in and out. They also included witches, and all those additions meant Cara’s life was a lot more difficult.

“I guess it wouldn’t be a very good prison if it wasn’t designed to trap me,” she murmured.

She wished that all her research on the void could have given her a way to bypass these spells. If Nick was here, he’d be able to walk straight through without a problem. But he wasn’t, and all the knowledge in that library couldn’t help her right now.

An idea struck her. Maybe she was wrong. The library could help. It already did.

Cara lifted her hands, gently touching the invisible currents in the air that corresponded with the runes on the ground. At the time, she was impressed by the magic she saw in the library, but now, she realised it wasn’t actually that complicated.

“Yeah,” Jay had said. “I think it’s blood-locked. We all gave a drop of blood when they were doing the runes.”
