Getting in the car, I reach over and grab Everly’s hand while driving toward our house.

Once we arrive, I carry her up to our bedroom, but she asks for a shower. I tell her to go ahead but that I need to call the doctor to come and check her out, especially with the head injury.

“I will be in to help you in a couple of minutes.”

Calling Dr. Bianchi, I instruct him to come over and check Everly out.

“Make sure you check for pregnancy.”

“Yes, sir.”

Hanging up, I return to the shower and help my girl get cleaned up and dressed in comfy clothes. Everly keeps holding her head as if she’s hurting, and it kills me to see her like this. I put her in bed, turn the lights down, and we wait for the doctor to arrive.

The doctor arrives, coming in with the large medical bag he always carries. The doctor asks Everly questions, one of which is the date of her last period. She responds by telling him she hasn’t had one in several weeks, and she expects it might have stopped because of the birth control shot that he gave her. The doctor meets my eyes across the room, letting me know he suspects the fertility drug that we actually gave her, without her knowing, may have worked. I’m almost unable to contain myself from the excitement that my angel could be pregnant with our baby.

I’m also scared to death that what she went through today could have hurt the baby. I can’t keep thinking about that. I need to stay positive. I keep telling myself it’s all going to be alright. Otherwise, I will go insane thinking about it.

Her being pregnant with our child will be another way we are bound to one another, and I need to be attached to this woman in every way possible. My need for her is absolute and all-consuming. I can’t ever go back to living without my angel.

Everly

With the knocks to my head and face that I received, the horrible headache I have isn’t surprising. It is really painful, and the light is making it worse. After gently bathing me, Gio dressed me and laid me down in our bed. He dimmed the lights and told me the doctor was on his way.

Once Dr. Bianchi arrived, he started asking me questions. We talked about my period being late, but it could be from the birth control shot that he gave me a few weeks ago. He listened to my heart and lungs, shined a light in my eyes, and asked me to pee in a cup. Once that was done, he drew some blood. The examination was really thorough and over the top for a couple of knocks on the head and face, but Gio was overprotective and demanded it. I allowed it so he could have peace of mind because I knew my being taken again scared him.

Once I was done being poked and prodded, Gio sat beside me and wrapped me in his arms, waiting for the doctor to give us his final opinion. “Mrs. Martinelli, congratulations, you are pregnant.”

“Wait. What? I know they hit me on the head, Doctor, but am I imagining things? You just said I’m pregnant?”

“Yes. You are definitely pregnant, Everly. You also have a concussion. You need to rest, take your vitamins, and I’m going to prescribe you some pain medicine. It’s safe to take for short periods while you’re pregnant and should help with the headache.”

I am still floored. “How can I be pregnant when I’m on the birth control shot?” Knowing that Gio didn’t want me to get pregnant and ordered the doctor to give me birth control sets my anxiety off. What if he no longer wants me or wants me to get rid of the baby? I would be alone and on the streets again. Nervous about what I am going to find, I look over at Giovanni’s face.

His facial expression is odd. A look of wonderment is on his face, but he hasn’t spoken. He just looks like he’s astonished or amazed even. Maybe he’s as shocked as I am since we thought the birth control shot was pretty dependable. As dependable as birth control can be.

“Gio, I’m so sorry. I didn’t mean for this to happen.”

My words jolt him out of his thoughts because he grabs my chin and lifts my face until our eyes meet. “You think I’m upset that you’re pregnant?”

“Aren’t you? You wanted me on the birth control shot, so you didn’t get me pregnant.”

Gio breaks out into a hysterical laugh. “You thought I didn’t want you pregnant?”

“I’m not sure why you are acting crazy right now, but I’m really confused. Why else would you make the doctor give me a birth control shot?”

Gio takes this opportunity to ask the doctor a question. “Is the baby going to be okay with everything that Everly just went through, Doctor?”

“The baby is well protected, and from what Everly told us, they struck her in the face and head. There are no guarantees, and stress is definitely not good for her or the child. I am hopeful with all of her vital signs being normal, no spotting or abdominal pain, that the pregnancy is still on track.”

I’m still wondering how it’s possible that I’m pregnant. It doesn’t seem real, and I must have voiced the question out loud. The doctor looks like he’s in a hurry to leave.

The doctor mumbles something that sounds likeoh boyunder his breath. “I’m going to send this blood into the lab, and we can use the last sample to compare the levels of HCG as well. The pregnancy hormone increases, so it should be higher in this sample. It will also tell us about how far along you are, Everly. I will leave you two alone and call you when I get your results. We will also call with an appointment for you to come into the office for your prenatal visit.”

With that, he turns and walks out of the house, leaving Gio and me alone. Silence fills the room. Gio speaks first.

“We need to talk, but first, I want you to take the pain medicine. Then I’m going to get you something to eat.”

He hands me two pills from the prescription bottle that Dr. Bianchi left and a bottle of water from his nightstand.
