Brett trusted Stafford about as far as he could throw him, so he picked JoJo up every evening and took her to work in the mornings. He didn’t want her traveling back and forth alone.

Brett took a stool at the counter and picked up the menu. Why, he had no idea. He knew what he wanted.

“Hi, can I help you?”

He looked to see a beautiful woman with dark hair and green eyes smiling at him.

“Hi. I’d like to get a burger with—”

“First time here?” She smiled.

“No. A friend brought me in years ago, and I recently moved here and have been in several times. What’s your name?”

“Deidra Mitchell, and you?”

“Brett Watkins.” They shook hands.

“Well, Brett Watkins, if you’ve been in before, you probably have a usual, right?”

“Yes, ma’am, but no one would know that.”

Deidra laughed. “Try me.” She tilted her head. “Would you like your usual, Brett?”

He grinned. “Sure.”

“Be right back.”

He watched her write on the pad in her hand, pin it to the metal wheel at the kitchen window opening, and spin it around. He shook his head. This should be good. He’d never met Deidra, so how could she know his usual?

She returned and set a glass of tea down, then walked off. He frowned. Good guess on the tea, maybe. He picked it up, tasted it, and raised his eyebrows. It was how he always ordered it. Extra sweet.

The door opened, and he glanced over to see a tall man enter. He nodded at Brett, then a big grin lit up his face when Deidra approached him.

“Hey, cowboy,” she said, leaned over the counter, and kissed the man.

“Hey, sweetheart. Are you ready to go?”

“Not yet. Meredith is running late, so I have to wait until she arrives.”

“No problem, darlin’.” He sat on a stool, and Deidra gave him a glass of ice water.

“Preston, this is Brett Watkins. Brett, my husband, Preston Mitchell. Brett is new to Clifton.”

Both men stood and shook hands, then resumed their seats.

“How do you like our town?”

“I love it. I was here years ago with a friend of mine. I used to work for him as an architect and pilot. I liked it so much here that once I got the chance, I moved.”

“Who’s your friend, if you don’t mind my asking?”

“Riley Madison.”

“I know Riley. We’ve been friends for years. He’s a good guy, and Katie is a wonderful woman.”

“I agree with you.”

“They have a great place.”
