“I’ll kick your ass.”

Brett laughed. “Then I suggest we head outside and sort this out.”

“If you think you’re man enough.”

“Let’s go. Quit running your mouth or shut the fuck up.”

Stafford stared at him, shook his head, and grinned.

“Not tonight, but it will come to a head. Just stay on your toes.” He walked to the door, opened it, and walked out.

Brett blew out his breath. He hated confrontations. He was a lover, not a fighter, but that piece of shit was asking for it, and Brett was ready to give it to him.

Walking through the crowd, he sat on the stool and picked up his drink.

“Did you get lost?” JoJo asked him.

“No. I ran into your ex-boyfriend. We had quite the conversation.”

“I knew it was him. What did you say?”

“Well, he threatened to kick my ass—” He stopped when JoJo laughed and grinned. “But not tonight. I have to stay on my toes. His words, not mine.”

“I’m sorry.”

“Don’t be, darlin’. I’m not worried about him. He’s not running me off. He’s a bully and has no idea how much he’s pissing me off.”

“He thinks all he has to do is threaten you and you’ll leave me alone. Just like the last man.”

Brett took her hand. “He will not get rid of me. I love you, JoJo. I can take care of him. You keep an eye out for him when I’m not around.”

“I will. Can we go?”

“Sure, baby. Let me settle the tab.” He raised his hand and then told Keith he wanted the check.

“Keith? Where’s Scarlett tonight?” JoJo asked him.

“She wasn’t feeling well, so she took the night off.”

“I’m sorry to hear that. I’ll call her in a day or two.”

Keith nodded, took Brett’s money, and walked to the cash register.

“Keep the change, Keith. Have a good evening.” Brett nodded at him when Keith grinned.

After taking her hand, Brett led her through the crowd to the doors. He pushed one open, and they walked outside. He opened the door for her at his truck, and she climbed into the cab. Then he drove them to his place.

As he wrapped his hands around the steering wheel and clenched his jaw, he knew he needed to get a grip. He wanted to choke the life out of Stafford. Okay, so maybe not go that far, but a good shot to the chin or nose would work. It would sure make him feel a hell of a lot better.

Chapter Ten

The following day, Brett drove into town to buy Christmas gifts. They were spending Thanksgiving with his parents. Brett wanted his parents to meet JoJo. Her parents were disappointed, but they understood.

He knew he’d spend Christmas with her because he wanted to have it at his new home. He invited his parents, but they weren’t sure yet.

After driving down Main Street, he smelled those burgers, and his stomach growled. He looked at the clock to see it was past one. No wonder he was hungry.

Pulling into the diner’s lot, he headed for the door. As he pulled it open, he glanced up the street to the pink awning of the bakery and decided dessert would be in order after his burger.
