When he finally finished shopping, it was dark. He loaded the backseat with the packages, closed the door, and crossed the street to walk to the bakery.

He saw the lights were out, so he tapped on the door. He smiled when he saw JoJo walking to the door. She grinned as she unlocked it for him and let him inside.

“Hi, did you get your shopping done?”

“Not quite. I have a few more things to get, but I’ll wait until we return to town.”

“Okay. I have to get some things yet too. Let me get my coat, and we can go.”

“Yes, ma’am.”

“Hi Brett,” Sloane said with a smile.

“Hey, Sloane. I met Deidra today.”

“At the diner?”

“Yes. Oh, and her husband, Preston. Nice couple.”

“They are.” She looked around him at the door and grinned. “Holt’s here. Let me get the door.”

Brett turned to see her open the door, and a tall man entered. He leaned down and kissed Sloane. She took his hand and led him to Brett.

“Brett, this is my husband, Holt James. Holt, Brett Watkins. Brett’s new to Clifton.”

“Brett, it’s nice to meet you.” Holt shook his hand.

“Yes, sir. You too.”

“Holt. How long have you lived here?”

“About seven months now. I moved from Helena.”

“He used to work with Riley,” JoJo said.

“Riley’s a good man. I hope you like it here.” Holt grinned.

Brett glanced at JoJo, then back at Holt. “I like it a lot.”

Holt chuckled. “I get it.”

“I’ll be right back,” JoJo said, heading for the kitchen.

“What do you do, Brett?”

Holt and Brett talked about his job, and then Holt told him he raised Morgans.

“Riley Madison told me you raised Morgans. One of my favorite breeds. Do you have any for sale?”

“I do.” Holt removed his wallet, pulled a business card out, and handed it to him. “Call me, and we can get together.”

“Great. It will probably be after the holidays, but I’d love a Morgan.”

“Just call me when you’re ready.”

“I will, thank you.” Brett put the card in his wallet.

“I’m ready,” JoJo said when she returned.
