“Brett?”

“Dad,” Brett said with a grin, then bound up the steps to hug his dad.

“Good to see you, son. Who’s this pretty lady, and what’s she doing with you?”

JoJo laughed. “Hello, Mr. Watkins. I’m JoJo Flynn.”

“Hello there, JoJo. Call me Michael. Come here, girl.”

She took a deep breath, walked up the steps, and hugged him.

“Any woman who can put a smile on my son’s face after what he’s been through is always welcome here,” Michael whispered in her ear.

JoJo leaned back from him. “He does the same for me.”

Michael grinned. “I’m glad to hear that. Come in and meet Brett’s mother.”

They entered the kitchen, and JoJo watched as a petite woman hugged Brett and then looked at her.

“Mom, this is JoJo Flynn. JoJo, my mother, Jennifer Watkins.”

“JoJo, it is so nice to meet you finally.” Jennifer hugged her.

“It’s nice to meet you too, Mrs. Watkins.”

“Please call me Jennifer. Would you like something to drink or eat?”

“Uh, no, thank you. I’m not very hungry, just tired.”

“I’m sure you are. Why don’t you show JoJo to your room, Brett, and you can grab a nap? We’re going to have sandwiches this evening.”

“That’s fine, Mom. I’ll get our luggage, JoJo, then take you upstairs. A nap sounds good. We left early this morning and made a few stops, so we’re a little tired.”

“I’m sure, son. I’ll help you with your things.” Michael walked out the door.

JoJo looked at Brett to see him staring at her.

“I won’t be long.”

“I’m fine,” she said, smiling. He nodded and went out the door. She removed her hat and coat and then hung them by the door.

“He’s worried about leaving you alone with me,” Jennifer said.

“Why is that?”

Jennifer laughed. “No doubt because he thinks I’ll ask many questions.”

JoJo chuckled. “Ask all you want, but I’ll be asking some too.”

“Good. Come into the living room, hon.”

JoJo followed her into a vast room. The walls were covered with old-looking wallpaper, and antiques sat around the room. She glanced around. It was so beautiful.

“You have a lovely home. I love farmhouses.”

“I do too. We’ve been here for over thirty-seven years. I love to travel, but nothing beats coming home.”

“That’s true.”
