“No problem. If you need anything, don’t hesitate to ask.” Nevada gave him his phone number. “Have a good day, Brett.” Nevada touched the brim of his hat, entered his truck, backed out, and drove off.

Brett got into his truck and drove to the house. He pressed the garage door remote, then pulled inside when it rose.

A few days later, Brett entered the kitchen, hung up his hat, and headed for the fridge to get bottled water. He twisted the cap off and drank half of it. There were two more designs to finish, and then he was taking a week off. There was still unpacking to do. He moved in over a week ago, and boxes still sat around.

One of the bad things about moving is packing and unpacking. He bought new furniture rather than moving it.

Brett shook his head. The furniture he bought was scheduled for delivery tomorrow, but the bedroom suit and two flatscreen TVs were in the bed of his truck. He called Riley.

“I need help with some furniture,” Brett said when Riley answered.

“I’m sorry. Who is this?”

Brett chuckled. “You know—”

“You’re breaking up,” Riley said, then chuckled.

“You’re a damn smartass, Madison.”

“I’m kidding. When do you need me?”

“Uh, now. I bought a bedroom set and two TVs. The guys at the store loaded it, but it’s damn heavy. I can’t do it by myself. I’m tired of sleeping in a sleeping bag on the damn floor. We might need another man. Do you know of anyone who can help?”

“Everyone I know is working. We can try it.”

“I met a neighbor, and he said to let him know if I needed anything, but I don’t know him well.”

“Who is it? I might know him.”

“Nevada Shelton.”

“I know Nevada. He might be at work too. He’s a deputy sheriff.”

“Oh. He never said what he did.” Brett sighed.

“Call him. If he can’t do it now, we’ll do it later today.”

“I’ll do it and call you back.” He disconnected, found Nevada’s number, and called him.

“Brett? What’s up?”

“Hey, Nevada. Are you busy?”

“No. I’m off today. What do you need?”

After Brett explained about the furniture, Nevada told him he’d be there in about twenty minutes. He thanked him, ended the call, and called Riley to let him know.

“I’m on my way. Give me the address.”

Brett rattled off the address. They disconnected, and he carried boxes to where he needed them. He dreaded unpacking, but he had to do it. At least it would pass the time until Riley and Nevada arrived.

Two hours later, the men stood in the kitchen drinking beer. Riley held the bottle up.

“I’m glad to see you have beer.”

Brett chuckled. “First thing I stocked in the fridge.”

Nevada grinned. “Nothing better on a hot day.”
