“I think we’ve all said that about a man at some point,” Sloane said.

“Did he ask you out?” Courtney asked.

“Yes, for Friday evening. We’re going to Hartland.”

“I hope you have a wonderful time.” Sloane smiled. “Let’s get back to work. I want to get out of here on time for once.”

JoJo nodded, glanced toward the windows, and saw Brett and Nevada striding across the street.Yep, headed for a heartache.

Chapter Three

Brett stared out the windshield as Nevada drove along the two-lane blacktop, heading out of town.

“I asked JoJo out,” he said.

“JoJo is great. She’s a good friend of Courtney’s.”

“We’re going to Hartland.”

“Did she tell you to make a reservation?”

“Yes, but she said she’d do it because I couldn’t get us in.” Brett shook his head. “How can she be so sure?”

Nevada laughed. “That place packs them in, especially on the weekends.”

“I see.”

“I’m sure she’ll get the reservation.”

Brett nodded, but said nothing. He watched as the scenery flew by, and in no time, Nevada pulled into his driveway, drove up to the house, and stopped.

“This is a great place. I meant to say something earlier, but you were cracking the whip.”

Brett laughed. “You probably won’t answer if you see my number come up on your phone.”

Nevada chuckled. “You could be right.”

“Do you want a beer?”

“Nah, I need to get home and shower. I’ll take a rain check, though. Courtney and I are going to the diner this evening. Can’t beat those burgers.”

“Damn, I know. They hooked me the first time Riley brought me one from there.” Brett opened the door, stepped out, shoved the door closed, and strode around the front. He saw Nevada put his window down.

“Seriously, if you need anything, call me.”

“Will do. Thanks for helping me.” Brett touched the brim of his hat, walked up the steps, entered the house, and sighed at the cooler air.

He removed his hat, hung it on a peg, strode to the fridge, removed a beer, and headed for the living room. He stopped in the archway and glanced around. The place definitely needed furniture.

It was hot today and only going to get hotter as the summer continued. Brett strolled to the master bedroom, got on the bed, leaned back against the headboard, opened the beer, then took a long swig. His throat was parched.

He smirked. People complained when it was hot and bitched when it was cold. It was human nature.

As he sat there, he picked up the remote, aimed it at the TV, and turned it on to watch the news.

Smiling, he thought about JoJo. He couldn’t wait to see her. This would be his first date in two years. He’d been with women but never found one he wanted more than one night with. It was different with JoJo. He not only wanted to spend more than one night with her, but he also wanted to be with her.

“Man, do not get your heart broken again,” he muttered.
